they found the potential of transforming the twodimensional

image into a three-dimensional one.

Consequently, the cong s cross section evolved from

circular to rectangular. This represented a turning

point in the developmental sequence of the cong,

when the emphasis shifted from surface decoration

to formal structure. The cong subsequently grew

much taller and assumed monumental forms, while

the face motifs became noticeably abbreviated.
