rather such methods of production fitted well
with the intended purpose. There was no need to
replicate the specific individuals who composed the
army — only their functions, since their personalities
were fully subsumed by their roles within the
organization. Nonetheless, particularizing the individual
soldiers enabled the artisans to differentiate
figures within groups of the same type (the cavalry,
