For children, the staircase on the second floor
serves as a versatile learning space. The staircase
is conceptualized as a spiral that ascends to the
third floor, where one will find a library, study area,
and homework area. From there, one will ascend to
the observation terrace situated atop the undertaking,
from which one can enjoy the view of the
Tha Chalom community from the vicinity of the
former water tower. The riverbank, fishing pier, and
nearly all residential areas of Tha Chalom are visible
from this vantage point. This endeavor aims to
enhance the vicinity and establish a captivating
vantage point without constructing an additional
observatory structure.
Regarding the interior design, the designers incorporated
ship-related components—including ship
ropes, masts, rudders, and other boat equipment—
to educate children, travelers, and visitors about
the intricacies of ships.
The Tha Chalom Community Public Library project
can be classified as a brownfield development from
a sustainable architecture standpoint. Brownfield
development refers to architectural construction
intended for industrial purposes or in response to
the demands of social conditions within a specific
context. The initial architectural design was discontinued
after a transformation in social conditions
and contextual factors. As a result, a forthcoming
trend in sustainable urban rehabilitation and development
is expected to be the restoration of historic
architecture and landscape design in light of these
new social conditions. This approach capitalizes
on the potential of pre-existing infrastructure to be
repurposed into public architecture.
“The project, adapting the old water tower’s structure
to accommodate its new functions, has yielded
noteworthy outcomes since we have renovated
historic structures to facilitate their adaptation
to the modern way of life and to provide building
occupants with innovative inspiration,” Isariya
Poonnopatham shared the insights gained from
the renovation of the Tha Chalom project’s design.
