A range of amenities, including
a library and workout space,
a tourist greeting center, and an
outdoor recreational area, were
decided through community member
participation; future improvements
should be consistent with Tha-
Chalom’s identity. As a result of the
community’s need for public space,
the Tha Chalom Sky Boat Library
concept was born.
Tha Chalom Market Community, alternatively
known as Tha Chin Market, is a municipalitysupervised
community that originated as a fishery
port and is presently under the jurisdiction of
Samut Sakhon. Long ago, the Chinese and Thai
communities established themselves in the region.
The proportionate population has changed in
Tha Chalom due to the influx of foreign laborers
from the expanding fishing industry, which has
increased the proportionate population. This
results in a greater proportion of older individuals
in the community structure, as Thais of working
age have relocated to other regions. Additionally,
the community requires additional public space
that accommodates individuals of all ages and
demographics. Through community member input,
it was determined that a variety of amenities were
required, including a library and exercise area,
a tourist reception area, and an outdoor activity
area; further developments should be consistent
with Tha Chalom’s identity. Consequently, the
Tha Chalom Sky Boat Library initiative arose in
response to the community’s demand for public
space.
“We began by soliciting feedback, establishing
a community engagement procedure to identify
the fundamental requirements of community
members, and consulting with network partners.”
“The Samut Sakhon Municipality assisted us in
securing the site, personnel, and the majority of
the funding necessary to execute this endeavor,”
explained Isariya Poonnopatham, a community
architect from the team of Arsom Silpa Institute,
regarding the operational procedures.
