Soil Block
Concrete substitute
Karen Kerstin Poulain, a young architect
in Mexico, investigates the potential of
constructing with soil by introducing a
novel approach: the technique of pouring
it. The outcome is a composite material
with properties similar to concrete, displaying
high resistance to compression
and cracking. The composite is formed
by combining tepetate, water, and rice
husks, resulting in a production process
that requires minimal energy input. In
addition to substituting concrete, a material
that requires a significant amount
of energy and contributes to eight percent
of world CO2 emissions, Karen
Kerstin Poulain’s alternative also has the
advantage of decreasing agricultural
waste.
