SolarLeaf
International Building
Exhibition (IBA)
environment, the algae grow. Heat is extracted to
heat the 15 residential units, heat the water supply,
or store it for later. This modular system may be
applied onto solid walls, where the green elements
will become decorative; or on windows where the
algae will also act as sun-shading screens for the
interior. The panels also give extra benefits such as
building insulation and noise reduction.
SolarLeaf is still being developed further. And
today we hear more about algae walls in new
developments. Perhaps a room tinted with the
colour fluorescent green will really be a common
scene of our future homes.
The Future is Back to Basic—with a Twist
Molina de Segura in Spain was a rocky sloping
terrain, characterised by ravines and droughtresistant
plants, but was flattened because of
urbanisation. Instead of following the typical
housing development of the area, Rambla Climate-
House, designed by Andrés Jaque and Miguel Mesa
del Castillo, takes a more ecological approach.
The architects work with a soil expert and an
ecologist to restore the humidity and biodiversity
