lower head hairs multiple; anteantennal tuft multiple. Lateral comb
of eighth segment of many scales in a large triangular patch. Lat-
eral abdominal hairs double on the first to fifth segments. Air-tube
two and one-half times as long as wide, the pecten of closely set
teeth, not reaching the middle; tuft multiple, at the middle of the
tube. Anal segment longer than wide, not ringed by the dorsal plate;
dorsal brush a long hair and a multiple tuft each side; ventral brush
large, with small tufts preceding the barred area. Anal gills very
short, bud-like.
This species occurs along the Atlantic coast from Nova Sco-
tia to Virginia. It breeds in the coastal pools. It is known to
migrate considerable distances (over thirty miles) in search
of food. It is a fierce biter, attacking during the day though
it is primarily an evening feeder.

Female. Length 4 mm.; wing 3 mm. Proboscis slender, black,
with a white ring at the middle. Occiput brown, the vertex with
narrow, yellowish-brown scales, broad white scales on the cheeks
the ocular margin white scaled; numerous erect, forked brown scales
on the nape. Mesonotum dark brown, the disk golden brown scaled,
darker brown on the humeri, almost silvery-white on the antescutel-
lar space and over the roots of the wings. Abdomen black, each seg-
ment with a narrow basal band of yellowish white scales and a small
white patch each side near the middle. Venter clothed with whitish
scales the apical portion often black. Wing scales black. Legs black;
hind tarsal segments each with a broad basal white band, the last
joint usually entirely white; middle and fore tarsi with narrow basal
bands, the last two segments entirely black.
Male hypopygizm. (Fig. 4, Pl. XII.) Side-pieces over three times
as long as wide; apical lobe absent; basal lobe rather sharply coni-
cal bearing numerous setae. Clasper short, strongly swollen medianly.
Claspette with long, curving, pilose, cylindrical stem; filament ligu-
late, long and pointed, bearing at the middle a short retrorse branch.
