CHARACTERISTICS 17 that on the ventral side the upper bridge (Figs. 7 and 8). This structure is called the rnesosome or phallosome. At each side of the mesosome and articulating with it is a sclerite, the paramere (P). Each paramere is directed dorso- laterally and is furcate. One branch, the dorsal arm, articulates with a short branch, basal arm, of the tenth sternite. The other arm (L.A.) extends outward and articulates with the side-piece. THE EXTERNAL STRUCTURE OF THE LARVA The larva (Fig. 9) consists of a prominent head, a large unsegmented thorax, followed by a slender abdomen of nine segments and the prominent siphon or respiratory tube which arises from the dorsal side of the eighth segment.
