FIGURE 2.3 CAPP for NC Milling of Spherical Parts (Space Frame Nodes) Space-frame nodes are joints that interconnect linear members to form complex space frames, as shown in Figure 2.7. Each spherical node has a hole configuration that defines the orientation of the bolt holes in spherical coordinates according to its position in the space frame. The hole configurations are determined by a CAD software for space-frame design. For each hole configuration, the CAD software outputs the required number of nodes and a table giving the orientations of the holes with respect to the center of the node in spherical coordinates, such as the one given in Table 2.1. Nodes with the same hole configuration vary in number, from a few to tens and hundreds, depending on the design of the space frame. Previously, according to the printed output of the tables, nodes were produced by drilling and tapping the holes into forged solid spheres using a manually adjusted two-axis indexing table mounted on a three-axis CNC machine. Because of the wide range of hole configurations, with only small and medium batches of nodes having the same configurations, frequent changes were required in the manually © 2001 by CRC Press LLC Process plan and NC program generation steps in the IMS.
