2008<br />

• Establishment of two Joint Ventures (JV) for the production of<br />

Medium Voltage on a worldwi<strong>de</strong> scale, with the Indian group C&S –<br />

Control and Switchgear, one of the four largest Indian groups in the<br />

fi eld of Low Voltage.<br />

• Inauguration of a second manufacturing unit of Bauen <strong>Efacec</strong> in<br />

Argentina, in July 2008. This new unit, along with the fi rst one that<br />

was inaugurated in July 2007, are part of a worldwi<strong>de</strong> network that<br />

manufactures and distributes High and Medium Voltage Switchgear<br />

components to the several <strong>Efacec</strong> assembly centers around the<br />

world.<br />

• Performance, in September 2008, of the fi rst stone ceremony for<br />

the construction of the new Power Transformers factory located<br />

in Effi ngham, in the State of Georgia (USA). This project, which<br />

amounted to nearly USD 180 million, will create up to 600 jobs by<br />

2015.<br />

•On the 30th of September 2008, the Board of Directors rectifi ed its<br />

<strong>de</strong>cision to classify India as one of <strong>Efacec</strong>’s priority markets. So,<br />

within the organization of the Group, it will be referred to as the<br />

Market Unit of India, joining the 6 regions previously mentioned.<br />

• Creation of a contracting JV – <strong>Efacec</strong> Contracting Central Europe<br />

GmbH – with headquarters in Viena (Austria). The JV performs<br />

business activities in High Voltage projects for the markets of Central<br />

and South Europe, including the Mediterranean region.<br />

• At the start of 2008, a signifi cant corporate change in the Human<br />

Resources Management area (HRM) was ma<strong>de</strong>. Two teams were<br />

created: a Strategic HRM team exclusively <strong>de</strong>dicated to establishing<br />

global HRM policies, management of Graduates, management of<br />

talent and global management of international HR; and another<br />

operational HRM team basically <strong>de</strong>dicated to global administrative<br />

management, management of Professionals and work relations.<br />

• Implementation of a vast Cultural Change project based on four<br />

essential pillars: efaINmotion (aimed at the company’s Graduates);<br />

efaEvolution (aimed at the company’s Professionals); 1st <strong>Efacec</strong><br />

International Meeting; and efaPI, with the purpose of adopting the<br />

English language as the company’s offi cial language.<br />

• <strong>Efacec</strong> was the fi rst Portuguese company chosen by IEEE (Institute of<br />

Electrical and Electronics Engineers) to be visited by 250 individuals,<br />

in the scope of the annual Power Transformers Committee of IEEE/<br />

PES.<br />

• Launch of the “Piloto Colombo <strong>Efacec</strong>” programme, with the purpose<br />

of encouraging the creation and implementation of i<strong>de</strong>as to promote<br />

the increase of productivity.<br />

• RDI certifi cation awar<strong>de</strong>d by APCER, in accordance with Portuguese<br />

standard NP4457:2007, to the Switchgear Business Unit.<br />

• <strong>Efacec</strong> was the only Portuguese company to participate in the ESA –<br />

European Space Agency project to provi<strong>de</strong> the fi rst ever Electronic<br />

Instrument to be completely <strong>de</strong>veloped and manufactured in<br />

Portugal. The equipment was qualifi ed by both ESA and NASA, and<br />

began fl ying in space at the start of 2008, in the loading bay of SPACE<br />

SHUTTLE – ATLANTIS.<br />

• Offi cial sponsorship of the inauguration ceremony of the new particle<br />

accelerator, the Large Hadron Colli<strong>de</strong>r (LHC) of the European<br />

Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). <strong>Efacec</strong> took part in this<br />

project since the LHC began to be <strong>de</strong>veloped.<br />

• Tribute to engineers Guilherme Ricca Gonçalves and Rui Gilberto<br />

Sabino Marques, who were awar<strong>de</strong>d by the City Council of Matosinhos<br />

with the Medal of Honour and the title of Honorary Citizen of the<br />

City of Matosinhos. The ceremony took place at <strong>Efacec</strong>’s facilities in<br />

Arroteia, since the company <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d to fully endorse this tribute.<br />

• On the 3rd of December, their excellencies the Portuguese Presi<strong>de</strong>nt<br />

Mr. Aníbal Cavaco Silva and the Prime Minister of Economy and<br />

Innovation, Mr. Manuel Pinho visited <strong>Efacec</strong>’s facilities in Arroteia<br />

with the purpose of inaugurating the expansion of this Hub’s power<br />

transformers production unit. This expansion of the transformers<br />

production capacity entailed an investment of about EUR 30 million,<br />

with the contribution of national and community funds of nearly EUR<br />

7.5 million.<br />
