58 2009 In 2009, Efacec made a substantial advance towards its strategic growth objective in the international market and the consolidation of the domestic market through numerous initiatives. The most signifi cant were: • The construction of Efacec Power Transformers Inc., the new power transformers factory of Efacec located in Effi ngham (Georgia, USA). The factory was concluded at the end of 2009 and operations began in November of that same year. • Visit, in December 2009, of Efacec’s Shareholders, the company’s Board of Directors and the Management Team to Effi ngham to perform the fi rst joint visit of the new factory. • The continuation of the processes necessary to extend Efacec’s operations in markets considered to be a priority for the company, particularly concerning the future presence of Renewables in the USA and Transformers in India. • Also in India, new developments were made regarding the logistics business activity, with the acquisition of the majority stake of Godrej by Gearl – Logistics, which means that Efacec now holds 51% of the Joint Venture. • Internationally, strategies, policies and practices of Financial Management and Human Resources Management were reinforced in international subsidiaries and in the support to Efacec’s expatriate employees. Additionally, ERP BaaN was implemented in the Market Unit of India. Certifi cations were equally obtained for the quality management system of Efacec Sistemas de España, for the Servicing Unit and for the quality management system of Efacec Central Europe and Efacec Contracting Central Europe. • On a corporate level, a Strategic Procurement Management area was created and a Chief Procurement Offi cer was appointed, one of several measures taken to reinforce the competitiveness of Efacec. This area is responsible for developing strategies and processes in this fi eld. It will also develop global initiatives that will affect the entire Group and will operate in an integrated manner with the different procurement departments of Efacec’s Business and Market Units, which will report to it functionally. • Likewise, on a corporate level, crucial steps were taken in the second half of 2009 to create a Strategic Risk Management area, with the appointment of a Chief Risk Manager. • The conclusion of the efaINmotion (aimed at Graduates) and efaEvolution (aimed at Professionals) projects, both of them keystones for the Cultural Change project initiated in 2008. Basically, the purpose of this project was to reinforce and accelerate Efacec’s cultural change process, based on standards viewed as relevant for the global market. • The mentioned participation of Efacec in the technical Consortium for electric mobility in Portugal, as a result of the mobilization effort of the Portuguese industry in this fi eld. • Achievement of third place in the 1st edition of the Sustainable Development Award 2009, awarded by Heidrick & Struggles. Efacec was placed among the top fi ve companies that were distinguished with this award, out of a total of 200 competing organizations. This was the fi rst time that Efacec participated in this award, obtaining 84.6% against an average of 81.2% for multinational companies (the category of which Efacec was part of).
• Achievement of an Honourable mention in the 2nd edition of the Innovation Product Award, promoted by COTEC and Unicer, for its presentation concerning the Smartgate solution developed by the Automation Unit. This solution is a Low Voltage/Medium Voltage substation controller and one of the many solutions that Efacec has contributed towards the reduction of carbon footprint. • Efacec received the Iberdrola Suppliers Award 2009, an international award in which Efacec was honoured for the category of Corporate Social Responsibility. • The High and Medium Voltage Switchgear Business Unit obtained a RDI certifi cation in accordance with Portuguese standard NP4457:200, becoming the fi rst industrial company to obtain this certifi cation in Portugal. • The Renewables Unit obtained the certifi cation for its quality, environment and safety system and the Transformers Unit received the certifi cation for its environment and safety management system. • Efacec was chosen as the focus company for the Business Case Competition 2009 of the Lisbon MBA, a joint programme of the Economics Faculty from the New University of Lisbon and the Economic and Business Sciences Faculty of the Portuguese Catholic University, in collaboration with MIT Sloan School of Management. • EDF – Electricité de France R&D visited the substations equipped with automation systems and integrated numerical protection, in accordance with the CEI 61850 standard, which were supplied by Efacec. •The Prémios Ideias Colombo (Colombo ideas awards) ceremony was held in the 1st quarter of 2009. Efacec’s idea management methodology – Colombo – is one of the most innovative practices of this genre in the world today. • Efacec celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2008. In order to commemorate such an important date in the life of the company, Efacec took the necessary steps to publish, at the start of 2009, a book that chronicles its development and highlights the major milestones of its 60 years of existence.
