To meet these new requirements and mostly to prevent situations in
which these services become unavailable, Efacec Sistemas de Gestão
has carried out several actions to maximize the availability of the
most important applications and systems.
In 2010, the Data Center of Arroteia was equipped with new
environmental conditions regarding both operation and safety. A new
safety environment was implemented for servers and communication
systems where operation conditions are more adequate to a high
performance of this type of technology.
This new room was built in the space already available, insulated
by fi reproof walls and including an IG55-type (50% nitrogen and
50% Argon) fi re detection and suppression system. Cooling is made
through a redundant chiller system that cools the air through vertical
columns inserted within the racks that hold the several equipments.
This system, with a much higher performance than the existing
one, ensures a smaller consumption of energy and cools down the
whole extension of the racks. The room includes a video surveillance
system and a monitoring and recording system that monitors the
consumption of energy per each rack, as well as the temperature and
humidity conditions around the servers. The modular architecture
of the cabinets, cooling and supply systems allow the possibility for
expansion. With this new room, Efacec can now count on an excellent
protection system for the support equipment of applications, in
keeping with the best current practices regarding this type of
environment. Other projects are already being developed to provide
a 24/7 hour service.
New Corporate Intranet
As mentioned, in 2010 a new corporate Intranet was launched. This
platform provides users with greater interaction with the whole
Efacec universe. It was developed in cooperation with all Business
Units, Market Units and Shared/Corporate Services.
Based on a modern content management system, this new platform
allows the users to, among other functions, create and organize
information in an intuitive and coherent manner, reducing the
replication of information.
Optimization of Production in the
Workplace
In 2010, the 5S methodology implemented in the Transformers Unit
showed signifi cant improvements in the organization of production
areas, something that can be confi rmed through the used assessment
methodologies.
The 5S programme was implemented along with other programmes
in the scope of Kaizen and Lean methodologies, which included
signifi cant layout changes of the production area, the installation of
new equipment and major changes in the organization. Very positive
results were obtained.
As an example, passage times of Shell-type transformers were
reduced in nearly 30% between 2007 and 2010.
