Environmental impact of domestic
activities: Management of Energy
At the hub of Arroteia, the Acordo de Racionalização do uso da Energia
(Reduction of Energy Usage Agreement) was approved in 2009. As a
result of this agreement, this industrial hub implemented (in April
2010) a real-time monitoring system that collects information from
22 energy usage spots and allows several aspects concerning its
management to be reinforced: it monitors partial consumptions
of energy in order to detect aspects subject to improvement and
assessment of the impact of the courses of action that were taken;
obtains data that can be used for research or external comparison
with the purpose of providing technical advice to increase the
effi ciency of several processes responsible for consumption of energy;
involves several energy users within the organization, helping them
by providing information about consumption of energy.
By analyzing several Monitoring Letters and approaching the energy
users themselves, it is possible to identify opportunities to reduce
energy consumption. At this time, Efacec has already detected
situations in which the applied loads are not justifi ed and is studying
joint solutions with the production and logistics departments.
Still in 2010, and also in Arroteia, the fi rst of several new solar energy
harvesting systems was installed. These will be installed in Efacec’s
facilities in the following years.
At the hub of Carnaxide was implemented a new lighting management
system. This system automates lighting periods in order to reduce
energy consumption.
At the hub of Maia, a study was made on the management of
energy. This study resulted in a report that determined several
courses of action that must be taken. One of them has already been
implemented and consists in changing the lighting equipment of
building 18 by installing T5 compact lamps (energy consumption was
reduced in nearly 50%).
In 2011, a real-time energy consumption monitoring system will
be implemented. This project will be developed internally by the
Automation Unit.

activities: Management of Gas Emissions
With the objective of reducing direct or indirect consequences of
emissions from organic compounds (VOCs) in the environment and
risks therein for human health, the Transformers Unit has been
carrying out since January 2010 an innovative pilot project that
consists in changing the painting process of equipments by replacing
solvent-based paint with water-based paint. The project is being
developed in partnership with CIN and the process is being tested in
power transformers.
This technique has already been previously implemented in
distribution transformers and reduces the consumption of solvents.
The fi nal change of the process is expected to take place in July
2011.

Wastewater of industrial facilities of the industrial Hub of Arroteia
(the only hub of Efacec with industrial effl uents in Portuguese
territory), are treated in the company’s ETAR station and transferred
to the Municipal collection tank of Matosinhos.
The analysis and control process of the ETAR includes a set of lab
analyses with the purpose of reaching a better performance. The
norms and time periods of the analyses are determined in a contract
signed with the Municipal services of Matosinhos. The analysis of
results is made by comparing the results obtained with the standard
limit values established by the law and the municipal services
that handle water distribution and wastewater treatment in the
municipality of Matosinhos.
In 2010, Efacec created the company’s water saving plan, which
separates the water network for human consumption from the water
network for industrial use. The project will be implemented in 2011.
