Transformers
The Transformers Unit invested in the systematic improvement of the
design and manufacturing processes of its products. In 2010, several
projects were carried out with an impact on costs and quality:
• Changes in the calculation methods of shunts.
• Development of tools to calculate losses and temperatures in
metallic parts exposed to magnetic fi elds and in shunts.
• Tap changing automation.
• Update of the calculation of short circuit stresses.
• Integration of other programs in the Wintree.
• Automatic dimensioning of Core-type windings in coils.
• Development of thermal models in Shell-type transformers.
• Changes in the databases to improve production interfaces.
In 2010, Efacec completed its fi rst study in the Assessment of the
Life Cycle of a product. This is a methodology developed to assess
the environmental aspects and impacts of the product throughout
its whole life cycle. This includes the product’s full and systematic
study, from the extraction of raw materials and use of natural
resources, to production, transport, use and fi nal destination.
The product selected for this fi rst study was the mineral oil-fi lled
distribution transformer with 630 KVA UN 15000/ 420V, Dyn 5. With
this study, it was possible to identify the most environmentally
critical phases of the industrial process, quantify resulting effl uents
and supply additional information to the Customers.
Medium Voltage Switchgear
Being the result of increasing international activities, in 2010 the
Unit had a year particularly full regarding the testing of its various
ranges of products.
Therefore, in 2010 the Efacec Fluofi x GC.T product was acknowledged
and approved by ENA (Energy Networks Association) to be used in the
power distribution grid of the United Kingdom.
Besides the British market, this product is aimed for other markets
such as India, where the product began to be sold. This Ring Main
Unit is used to protect the transformer in substations.
The acquisition of a company for manufacturing substations in Spain
(Efacec Equipos Eléctricos) fi ts with the strong investment made
in certifi cation tests in keeping with the requirements of the main
Spanish power distribution companies, such as Iberdrola and Endesa,
besides the AENOR certifi cation.
The product of highlight in this market is the Fluofi x range, namely
the 36 kV version.
Likewise, the same was made for the certifi cation of products for
Eastern markets, namely the assessment of the level of safety of the
internal arc inside substations, in accordance with the criteria of
international standards. As such, the new range of modular Normafi x
products had its performance increased to 20 kA.
Also, in 2010 was concluded the certifi cation of the fi rst product
from the Unit intended for the USA market with the testing made
to the IATS disconnector. Tests were made in accordance with ANSI/
IEEE standards and successfully completed at the subsidiary of the
KEMA lab, located in the USA.
As for high voltage, in 2010 were made and tested the new versions
of the SHD disconnector of center break at 245 kV and the new
STE grounding disconnector at 550 kV, both intended to European
markets or Latin America.
Also enrolled in RDI activities, the expansion phase of the
Empowerment project implemented by this Unit continued in 2010,
as well as process innovation and Lean Manufacturing projects and
certifi cation of Processes implemented in Efacec Argentina.
