Art under the Venetians
Kornaros – what a name it is in Cretan history – was an artist of
talent and rich imagination, which led him far away from the Byzantine
tradition, to Italian landscapes and perhaps even mediaeval
bestiaries. I know of no other work by him. This one remains as the
most pleasing memorial of the Venetians in Crete: the more moving
and pleasing in that it was painted in 1770, a hundred years after the
fall of Candia and the departure of Venetian and Cretan artists from
the island.
