About This Guide
This guide provides the prerequisites, procedures, and options used in installation and
upgrading of Progress Sonic development and distributed components. The audience for
this book is the people that perform the tasks of physical installations and configurations.
This guide has the following chapters and appendices:
● Chapter 1, “Overview of Installations and Upgrades,” which describes the topology
of Progress Sonic installations through the various types of product licenses and
installation types. The chapter also describes how to start installed products, and how
to access product documentation, tutorials, and support.
● Chapter 2, “Using Progress Sonic Installer,” details planning and installation of
products for evaluation, development, and deployment for runtime infrastructures.
● Chapter 3, “Using Progress Sonic Launcher Installer,” details installation of
distributed runtime containers, and use of utilities that configure, setup, and launch
new containers.
● Chapter 4, “Setting Up Containers,” shows how the setup of 8.5 containers that was
performed by the Sonic Installer and the Sonic Launcher called a setup utility
application that you can run to set up additional containers. The complete properties
and parameters used by the setup utility are presented and discussed.
● Chapter 5, “Using Response Files with Installers,” shows how the underlying
response files of each of the installers can preset the prompts for unattended
installations that silently use the specified prompts to complete their task.
● Chapter 6, “Upgrade Planning,” describes general planning and compatibilities for all
Sonic upgrades.
● Chapter 7, “Upgrading Version 8 Domains and Tools,” describes techniques for
advancing Version 8 Progress Sonic installations up to Sonic 8.5.
● Chapter 8, “Upgrading from 7.5 or 7.6 to 8.5,” describes the more complex
techniques that bring version 7 Progress Sonic installations up to Sonic 8.5.
● Chapter 9, “Updating Sonic Installations,” describes how to apply service packs to
Sonic Domain Managers, and tools.
● Chapter 10, “Uninstalling Progress Sonic Products,” describes steps to remove and
unregister installed Progress Sonic components from systems.
● Appendix A, “Characters in Progress Sonic Names,” details the naming restrictions
for configuration objects.
● Appendix B, “Troubleshooting Installations,” describes some tips and techniques
when working directly with installations.
