Upgrading a Fault Tolerant Management Framework
Sonic 8.5 offers the same fault tolerant management framework functionality available in
7.6, yet transformed it to use the new container startup and file structures. In V7.5,
Progress Sonic introduced Directory Service Replication, enabling the complete Domain
Manager and Directory Service to be identical in two separate locations. This model
continues to be the strategy.
The following procedure describes upgrading a fully functional 7.5 or 7.6 fault tolerant
management framework to 8.5.
Important Handling of a DS store location outside the Sonic install directory — When the
Directory Service store in 7.5 or 7.6 is in a directory outside of the Sonic install directory,
if the previous Directory Service storage directory and the new Directory Service storage
directory are identical, the primary and backup installations are handled as follows:
● Primary Domain Manager — The version 7 store will be upgraded in place. This case
makes it even more important to backup the store before starting its upgrade.
● Backup Domain Manager — As the completion of the upgrade of the backup is
intended to leave the backup without any DS store (so that the primary is forced to
create a new one and synchronize it), the existing version 7 DS store must be archived
and then the entire domain_name folder deleted so that the directory is empty. When
the container that hosts the backup DM starts, its DS store will be initialized by the
primary into the same directory that was used before the upgrade.
