1166 L'ART PALÉOLITHIQUE oùù la représentation figurée aurait eu pour rôle, comme les représentationss mimées chez divers primitifs (i), d'assurer lee succès d'une chasse réelle, soit simplement des œuvres d'art,, des scènes de g-enre reproduisant, sans intention mag-ique,, un événement réel ou imaginé. Il paraît difficile d'attribuerr une intention magique à un ensemble de gravures dee Font-de-Gaume (fig. 80), qui semble représenter un groupee de Chevaux attaqués par un Lion. Pour contester lee caractère purement artistique des représentations de chasses,, on a allégué (2) qu'elles représentent, non des chassess à la grosse bête, dont leur caractère exceptionnel et dangereuxx pourrait justifier la commémoration fig-urée à titree d'événements historiques, mais uniquement des chasses auu Cerf, au Bouquetin ou au Sanglier qui, par leur facilité ett leur banalité, ne méritaient pas cet honneur. Cet argumentt repose, à notre avis, sur une erreur psychologique. Laa reproduction fig-urée d'une scène dans une intention purementt artistique prouve bien que cette scène présentait de l'intérêtt pour l'artiste, qu'elle avait attiré son attention. Mais cettee attention et cet intérêt peuvent avoir été excités non parr le caractère important ou exceptionnel de cette scène, maiss au contraire par sa fréquence entraînant sa banalité. Notree art ne présente pas moins des tableaux de g-enre que dess tableaux d'histoire; les scènes de la vie courante sont représentéess au moins aussi fréquemment que des événementss exceptionnels dans divers arts primitifs, par exemple danss les gravures sur bambous de Nouvelle-Calédonie, qui n'ontt aucune intention magique; et je n'aperçois pas quelle intentionn magique a bien pu faire peindre à Minateda la scènee on ne peut plus courante d'une maman tenant son enfantt par la main (fig. 81).
