LA NUOVA VITA DEL LAMINATO
Attualmente impegnato proprio a mettere a punto il restyling di una serie di modelli in laminato, di Febal,
Alfredo Zengiaro, architetto e designer di chiara fama, si dichiara “sostenitore” entusiasta delle superfici finite
con quello che definisce «uno dei materiali più espressivi del momento: il laminato. Che sembra rinato a nuova
vita», afferma. «Oggi ad una cucina si richiede grande immagine, alta tecnologia-prezzo contenuto; penso che il
laminato abbia da sempre risposto agli ultimi due requisiti, ma adesso sempre più, e con grande innovazione,
anche al primo. Le superfici materiche dei nuovi laminati, che riproducono in modo perfetto quelle di materiali
naturali e tessuti, hanno infatti cancellato definitivamente il vecchio “effetto plastica”. E le bordature delle antine,
che erano l’altro lato debole della finitura in laminato, si sono evolute di pari passo, sono diventate perfette e
quasi senza giunture a vista grazie alle innovative colle speciali. A muovere questa ondata di rinnovamento,
investendo molto nella ricerca, sono le aziende leader del settore, ovvero gli stampatori della carta e i produttori finali. Come sappiamo, il cosiddetto
laminato è in realtà costituito da più strati, ovvero da “un’anima” di carta fenolica - il Kraft, da un foglio di carta colorata - tinta unita o fantasia, e infine
da un strato esterno detto Overlay, impregnato di resine melamminiche, che viene pressato sopra la carta conferendo matericità alla superficie.
La novità, da parte di chi produce, sta nell’aver rinnovato sia la qualità dei disegni della carta (che ora raffigurano in modo perfetto le ombre e le
sfumature di legni e tessuti) sia la fattura dello strato esterno che, grazie ai nuovi macchinari, viene texturizzato riproducendo fedelmente le venature dei
legni o le trame delle stoffe. È quindi dai grandi produttori di superfici in laminato che arrivano gli stimoli progettuali più significativi. Ne sono un esempio
gli ultimi modelli realizzati per Febal, City e Cherry, prodotte sia in legno sia in laminato».
Ma la differenza, se non si sa, neppure si vede.

The well-known architect and designer is a big fan of surfaces finished in what he describes as “one of the most expressive materials of the moment,
laminate. One that seems to be enjoying quite a renaissance”. He goes on: “Kitchen design today is all about image, technological content
and affordability; and while laminate has always ticked the last two of those boxes, now it is also ticking the first of them, in a highly innovative way.
The surfaces of today’s new laminates now perfectly reproduce the textures of natural materials and fabrics, shrugging off the old “plastic effect”
they used to have. And the edges of cabinet fronts, which were laminate’s other weakness, have evolved too, and are now perfect and almost seamless
thanks to the use of special innovative adhesives. Leading firms in the sector (printers of paper and the end manufacturer) have invested heavily in R&D.
Most people know that laminate is created by bringing together a series of different layers, that is to say an inner “core” of phenolic resin craft paper,
a sheet of plain or patterned coloured paper, and an outer layer (the so-called Overlay), which is impregnated with melamine resins and pressed
onto the surface to give it its textural finish. The new feature of the manufacturing process lies in the quality of the designs on the paper, which now
perfectly reproduce the actual look of fabric and wood, with improved technologies for the creation of the outer surface, which is textured to recreate
a genuine wood-grain or fabric-weave effect. So leading manufacturers of laminated surfaces are leading the way in the latest designs.
Good examples include the latest models produced for Febal - City and Cherry - made of both wood and laminate”.
To which we might add that you really can’t tell the difference.
