The results at the second VAS measurement for example were:
33 patients reported a significant reduction in headache, 3 patients showed no change and
the remaining 3 patients had a light deterioration with respect to the intensity of the
unilateral headache.
The mean intensity VAS score improved 3.2 points on a scale of 0 to 10 points.
The mean frequency of the headache attacks decreased from twice a week to twice a
month.
The mean duration of the headache attack decreased from 10 hours or more to 4 hours.
The results at the third VAS measurement for example were:
There were no significant differences (statistical p-value < 0.05) between the second and
third measurement of the intensity, frequency and duration of the headache.
The mean headache with respect to intensity, frequency and duration showed no
deterioration 2.5 months after the last osteopathic treatment.
The patients who reported a total loss of their headache attacks increased to 7, compared
to 0 patients at the first measurement and 4 patients at the second measurement.
Conclusion
This study clearly shows that a specific osteopathic treatment strategy for a large group of
chronic unilateral headache patients can make a positive change to the intensity of the
headache (84.6%), and also to the frequency and duration of the headache attacks.
Osteopathy can play an important role in reducing or changing the chronic unilateral headache
complaints, thus improving the quality of life of the patients concerned.
