q) Costs of maintaining the network
There are at present no cantonal or national total figures – except in the canton of Tessin –
for the cost of maintaining, renovating and signalling the network of hiking trails. In order to fill
this significant gap, a calculation tool developed especially for this study was used to esti-
mate standard costs nationwide and in each canton. The standard costs reflect the level of
spending required to maintain a well-tended network of hiking trails. The model is based on
the detailed cost data provided by Tessin, supplemented with specific surcharges relating to
operating figures obtained from the canton of Aargau.
The length of the network (on 5th and 6th class roads), the type of trail and the altitude
proved to be appropriate indicators for ascertaining the level of spending. They were accord-
ingly incorporated into the calculation tool for each canton separately and are accompanied
by proportional cost rates.

The resulting standard costs for the maintenance of a well-tended network of hiking
trails in Switzerland amount to a total of 53 million Swiss francs annually. This includes all
spending for operational upkeep, renovation of the network of trails, signalling, planning and
