The values indicated are based on the rough estimates of the number of hiking days per canton. They
are therefore subject to uncertainty.
Both effects are most noticeable in the typical hiking cantons (Bern, Grisons and Valais) and
in Zurich, which is the most densely populated. This can be attributed in the typical hiking
cantons above all to the daily disbursements of hikers. In Zurich, the high level of spending –
compared to other Swiss cantons – is due to both the daily disbursements of local hikers and
disbursements on hiking equipment. Spending on the network‟s upkeep is also highest in the
typical hiking cantons with the longest networks, but the impact in terms of added value and
employment is marginal. When interpreting the effects, it must be remembered that any dis-
bursements by other users of the network (people going for walks or joggers, who use the
hiking trails in nearby recreational areas) are not included.
Besides creating value and jobs, the existence of a good system of hiking trails can have
other, hard-to-quantify regional economic effects. For example, an attractive network of hiking
trails may be a determinant of high-quality residential areas and tourist destinations and
