Helmholtz Department of Structural Infection Biology at CSSB – joint position offer with University of Hamburg.
The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI), a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest
scientific research organi sation comprising 18 research centres, focuses on the under standing of bacterial and
viral infection processes with a strong dedication towards translational infection research.
HZI and University of Hamburg plan to establish a new Depart ment of Structural Infection Biology at the Centre
for Structural Biology (CSSB), to be built soon on the campus of the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in
Hamburg. In this new inter disciplinary centre, research departments from University of Hamburg and several
other universities and non-university institutions will work together under one roof in the wider field of
structural biology. DESY harbors world-class infrastructures such as FLASH, PETRA III, as well as the European
X-ray free-electron laser X-FEL, starting operation in 2015.
HZI and University of Hamburg are dedicated to sustainability. Equal opportunity and family-friendly policies
are a matter of course. We also treasure cultural diversity, communication and interaction among people from
different backgrounds and with different lifestyles.
HZI and the University of Hamburg invite applications for a
FULL PROFESSORSHIP (W3) AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
OF STRUCTURAL INFECTION BIOLOGY
commencing as soon as possible. Ref. No. 2186/W3
Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in
acquiring external funding and carrying out externally-funded projects. The University places particular
emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests applicants to provide details of both their teaching
experience and objectives.
HZI and University of Hamburg seek to increase the proportion of women in teaching and research and we
therefore explicitly encourage qualified female academics to apply. Qualified female applicants receive
preference in the application process.
Tasks:
We invite applications by research scientists with a strong track record in structural biology, preferably X-ray
crystallography. Research should focus on the investigation of molecular infection mechanisms, notably
interactions between bacterial pathogens and their host cells. A strong interest in the structural elucidation of
large macromolecular protein complexes involved in infection (e.g. type III secretion systems) and membrane
proteins would be advantageous. Experience in integrating multidisciplinary approaches in infection research,
personnel management and project coordination is expected. Rapid integration into the research portfolios of
the HZI, the University of Hamburg and the future CSSB is desired. Success in obtaining external research
funding is a further essential prerequisite. The position includes lectures for two hours per week at the
University of Hamburg.
Requirements:
Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in §15 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act.
(Applicants must hold a doctoral degree and have completed habilitation or equivalent. Applicants who are 50 years
old or older at the date of appointment and who do not hold a civil servant status qualify only for employee status.)
Qualified disabled candidates receive preference in the application process.
In principle, the position is suitable for part-time work.
Further information can be obtained by Prof. Dr. Dirk Heinz, Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Centre for
Infection Research (Phone: +49-531-6181-1000, e-mail: dirk.heinz@helmholtz-hzi.de).
The deadline for applications is 02 January 2014. Please submit your application,
including the standard documents (Curriculum vitae, list of publications, 5 printed
representative publications, list of teaching experience and external funding, and a
com prehen sive research plan (max. 4 pages)) and reference code 2186/W3 to: An den
