SOCIETYTraces of BritishArt in AustriaSOCIETY spoke with Jasper Sharp, AdjunctCurator for Modern and Contemporary Art atthe KHM Wien, about British traces inAustria‘s history of art.You are Adjunct Curator for Modernand Contemporary Art at the KHM.How does Modern and ContemporaryArt “fit” into KHM?The museum is first and foremost adepository of historical objects, whichare preserved, researched, presentedand interpreted within the museum.By introducing the art of more recenttimes into the museum in the form ofexhibitions, artist talks or other temporaryprojects, we are establishing aconversation between objects createdduring different periods of history. Itaims to bring us closer to those historicalobjects, and to understand thatthere are certain essential and universalideas which have occupied creativeminds for many centuries and continueto do so today. Indeed, the most articulateexplanations of historical objectsoften come from living artists, who arethemselves immersed in the languageand vocabulary of the visual arts. Are there many British exhibits at theKHM? Which are the most outstandingones?Unlike institutions such as the Louvre,Paris, or the Metropolitan Museum ofArt in New York, both of which endeavourto collect and present the entirehistory of art, the KunsthistorischeMuseum makes no claim to do so.Its collections are very much privatecollections, built up over several centuriesby a succession of imperial rulers. Each of them had their own specificinterests and tastes, which resulted inareas of particular strength and depth, such as the holdings of paintings byPieter Bruegel the Elder or the remarkableKunstkammer. But it also meansthat there are periods or schools of arthistory which are less well represented, because the Habsburgs were eithernot interested in them, or did not havethe same access to them due to geopoliticalrivalries. The case of British artis a good example. We have very fewBritish works in the collection; a singleThomas Gainsborough landscape ofthe Suffolk countryside, and two portraitsby Sir Henry Raeburn and JosephWright of Derby. It just so happensthat one of the only other works thatwe have, a tender portrait of a youngwoman by Sir Joshua Reynolds, is oneof my favourite works in the entirecollection. If there would be an exhibition about“The United Kingdom’s traces inAustria’s history of art” – what wouldit look like? The most interesting dialogue betweenartists in the UK and artists inAustria is one from more recent times -that between the Vienna Secessionistsand the Glasgow School, primarilyCharles Rennie Mackintosh and hiswife Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh. The Mackintoshes were invited to exhibitin Vienna at the eighth Secessionexhibition in 1900 and earned greatpraise from designers and architectssuch as Josef Hoffmann and KolomanMoser. Several objects that were presentedin this exhibition can today befound in the collection of the Museumof Applied Arts in Vienna (MAK). Anexhibition exploring these links in moredetail would be fascinating. You are living in Vienna since 2006– how did the Viennese art worldchange during these 14 years?Over the last years, the art world inVienna has changed quite considerably. Many new spaces have sprungup, from commercial galleries andartist-run project rooms, and they havecontributed to a new energy withinthe scene. At the same time, a numberof important institutions have eitherclosed or moved away - this has had anundeniably detrimental effect on thescene, reducing the amount of exhibitionspaces in the city and the amountof exchange between local and internationalart scenes. Meanwhile themain, state-funded museums havegrown considerably in terms of thescale and frequency of exhibitions thatthey produce, and the visitor numbershave risen accordingly. This has beenfuelled in part by increasing numbersof tourists, a fact which has led toreal problems during the Coronaviruspandemic. As a result, museums arenow having to develop new forms ofoutreach aimed more towards theirlocal public. We can only hope that thiswill continue in the future.Foto: SOCIETY/ProbaschnigLÄNDER IM FOKUS054
