Qualifications of the F<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t Expert<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t expert may acquire this expertise <strong>in</strong> a variety of ways. For<br />

the most part, however, expertise comes from experience ga<strong>in</strong>ed through onthe-job<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g or by work<strong>in</strong>g as an apprentice for an experienced, recognized<br />

expert. The expert has also participated <strong>in</strong> formal classroom tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t classification and advanced latent f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t techniques.<br />

Knowledge of the F<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t Expert<br />

It is imperative that the expert be knowledgeable <strong>in</strong> all phases of the f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t<br />

science.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t History<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t expert is often questioned on the witness stand relative to<br />

the historical development of the science. The expert must be knowledgeable<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g the f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t pioneers and their contributions to the development<br />

of f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t science.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t Classification<br />

The expert must possess a thorough understand<strong>in</strong>g of the basic Henry f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t<br />

classification system and be able to expla<strong>in</strong> and illustrate all phases<br />

thereof. This expert must also be aware that there are f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t classification<br />

systems other than the Henry system.<br />

Latent Pr<strong>in</strong>t Procedures<br />

The expert needs a thorough understand<strong>in</strong>g of all phases of latent f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t<br />

matters, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

1. Powder and chemical development of latent pr<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

2. Elements of the perspiration to which the different chemical developers<br />

respond<br />

3. Formulas necessary for mix<strong>in</strong>g chemicals<br />

4. Comparison of latent and <strong>in</strong>ked pr<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

5. Detection of latent pr<strong>in</strong>ts by laser and other light amplification technology<br />

technologies<br />

Scientific Publications<br />

1. The expert must keep abreast of the latest developments <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>gerpr<strong>in</strong>t<br />

science by read<strong>in</strong>g publications and periodicals, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the
