Deductive reason<strong>in</strong>g is used for mak<strong>in</strong>g decisions throughout the identification<br />

process, as it is essential to the methodology of all scientific discipl<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

In <strong>in</strong>stances where the decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g process <strong>in</strong>volves retrieval of<br />

data from experience (long-term memory storage), the reason<strong>in</strong>g is still<br />

deductive if the decision is based on past observations of empirical data.<br />

Reliance on experience is valid because the data can be verified.<br />

Deductive reason<strong>in</strong>g is the process of deriv<strong>in</strong>g the logical consequences<br />

of propositions. The propositions may be based on current observations<br />

(empirical data from the pr<strong>in</strong>ts be<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ed) and on experience (longterm<br />

memory storage regard<strong>in</strong>g past observations). Many people are often<br />

unaware of the rules of <strong>in</strong>ference that they employ <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g deductions and
