A continuation of PED 138 (Prerequisite: PED 138).<br />

PHED 1400—Fitness for Living III. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Credit<br />

An individual fitness program which encompasses these health related components for physical<br />

activity: cardio respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility<br />

and body composition. There will be additional emphasis on the development of programs focusing<br />

on healthy backs and becoming a smart health consumer.<br />

PHED 1410—Fitness for Living IV . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Credit<br />

An individual fitness program which encompasses cardio respiratory endurance, muscular endurance,<br />

muscular strength, flexibility and body composition.<br />

PHED 1450—Beginning Scuba . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Credit<br />

This course instructs the novice in the skills of SCUBA diving. Emphasis is placed on safety<br />

and a pattern of survival in all phases of underwater instruction. Some time will be spent in<br />

classroom theory and lecture. A greater part will be spent in pool/lab work and open water dive<br />

trips. Field trips are required for certification. Upon successful completion of the course, the<br />

student will become a certified SCUBA diver, receiving an Open Water Diver certification<br />

from PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors). Fee required.<br />

PHED 1560—Skiing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Credit<br />

Instruction and practice for the development of skiing skills. Class will be held at Ober-<br />

Gatlinburg on four sessions. A fee for facility use, ski rental, lift tickets, and insurance will be<br />

charged for this activity.<br />

PHED 1750—Concepts of Wellness . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 Credits<br />

A course that emphasizes a six-dimensional model of wellness (physical, emotional, occupation,<br />

social, spiritual, and intellectual). This course will stress the importance of creating a balance<br />

of these dimensions that make up our daily lives. This course will fulfill requirements of<br />

one physical education activity course.<br />

PHED 2050—Recreational Hiking . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Credit<br />

Instruction and experience in hiking for exercise and recreational enjoyment: Fundamentals of<br />

hiking, safety concerns, preparation and planning, and use of trail maps. Prerequisite: P.E.<br />

Fitness Walking or permission of instructor.<br />

A course designed to inform the novice through the experienced outdoors-person on the latest<br />

equipment, techniques, and clothing for safe hiking and camping. Students may apply this<br />

course toward one of the required physical education activity courses.<br />

Training for beginners in swimming, emphasizing recreational swimming. A special fee will be<br />

charged for this course based on facility rental charges.<br />

Fundamentals of rowing, including proper technique, safety, physical fitness, terminology, and<br />

recreational aspects of rowing.<br />

PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT<br />

This course presents the basic concept of kinesiology. The perspective taken in studying this<br />

subject is from that of a physical therapist assistant. A good understanding of musculoskeletal<br />

anatomy will be reinforced and the neurological connection addressed. Emphasis is placed on<br />

normal motion and movement patterns, especially as they apply to physical rehabilitation.
