Theexecutiveboard,consistingofProf.Rost,Prof.BüchnerandDr.Saalmann,meetsupondemand. Inparticularitpre-screensthenumerousapplications.Thedailycoordination,i.e.contacttostudents, applicationandadmissionprocedure,advertisements,organizationofthelecturesandseminarprogram andmaintenanceoftheweb-pageishandledatthe mpipks. Applicationforsecondfundingperiodandfuturedevelopment Overthelast5yearsthescientificlandscapeinDresdenhasundergonesignificantdevelopment,not theleastthankstotheIMPRSregardingPhDtraining. Infact,wehavehadnumerousrequestsfrom colleaguestojoinourIMPRS.Partially,wehaveaccommodatedtheserequestsbutrefrainedfroma majorextensionofourIMPRS,sincewestronglybelievethatinordertomaintainthebenefitofan IMPRS,itsstudentsshouldhaveachancetoknoweachotherwhichlimitsinourexperiencethesizeof theschooltoabout50–70PhDstudentmembers. ThesedevelopmentsallowustofocustheresearchoftheIMPRSon“Modellinginthenaturalsciences—fromalgorithmstoapplications”byincludingnewcolleagueswhohaverecentlybeenappointed inDresden. Atthesametimeweincreasesignificantlythenumberofparticipatingdepartmentsfrom theTUDresden,byengineering,mathandcomputerscience.Theconcentrationontheoreticalresearch hasbeenplannedincoordinationwithourexperimentalcolleaguesfromIFWwhowillapplyforamainly 100 DetailsandData
experimentalPhDschool. ThisnewPhDschoolandourIMPRSwillcloselycollaboratewithaharmonizedlecturesprogramintheareasofcommoninterestandbymutualrecognitionoflecturestocollect creditpoints. Theunifyingschemeistheoreticaltreatmentandinmostcasesmodellingprocessesinnature.Forthis reasontheemphasisoftheIMPRSonmodellingisnotonlyverysuitablefortheDresdenresearcharea asdetailedbefore,butalsofor mpipks.Moreover,theinternationalcharacteroftheIMPRS(withabout halfthestudentsfromabroadandhalffromGermany)findsitsidealcounterpartat mpipkswithits largervisitorsprogram(exchangeofpeople,workshopprogram). DresdenisclosetothePolishandCzechborders. Therefore,itwasoneofthehopesofthefounding committeeofthe mpipksthatitwouldestablishclosetiesinparticulartotheuniversitiesofWroc̷law andPrague. WiththeIMPRSthesetieshavebeenestablished,putonaformalbasisandfilledwith scientificlife,inthemeantimetremendouslyfacilitatedthroughtheECmembershipofPolandandthe CzechRepublic 3.3 WorkshopandVisitorsProgram TheVisitorsProgramof mpipkshostsguestscientistsforaperiodofusuallyuptotwoyears.Excellent workingconditionsareofferedtoqualified,mostlyyoung,scientists. Thisalsoincludeslogistichelp, e.g.,forfindingsuitableaccommodation,solvingvisaproblems,etc. Theclosecollaborationwithadministrativeunitsresponsibleforexampleforthecomputationalandtechnicalequipmentoftheoffices, allowstheguestscientiststofullyconcentratetheireffortsonresearch.InformalTeaSeminars,aweekly YoungScientistsJamSessionandfinancialsupportforjoiningGermanlanguagecourseshelptointegrate guestscientistsfastandeasilyintothelocalcommunity.Manyguestscientistsparticipateactivelyinthe WorkshopandSeminarProgramof mpipks. InternationalWorkshop“ExploringComplexDynamicsinHigh-DimensionalChaoticSystems: From WeatherForecastingtoOceanicFlows”,January25-29,2010 During2009the mpipkshosted201guestscientistswithcontractsforatleastthreemonths,and212 duringtheyear2010,includingpredocs. Weenjoyedalargenumberofseniorscientistswhousedtheir sabbaticaltimeforlong-termresearchstaysat mpipks. Thisledtoanenhancementoftransferof experiencetoyoungscientistsattheinstitute.
