ThemaingoaloftheTURB10meetingwhichtookplacefromMay3throughMay14,2010wastobring<br />
togetherleadingscientistsandyoungresearchersfromthreeneighboringfields,namelyfluidturbulence,<br />
plasmaturbulence,anddynamotheory.Themeetingconsistedofaone-weeksummerschool-attended<br />
by8lecturersandabout70participantsfromvariouscountries-andaone-weekinternationalworkshop<br />
withmorethan80participants. Thelatterfocusedonthetopicsofbasicturbulencecharacteristicsin<br />
plasmasandfluids(includingtheimportantquestionofuniversality),Lagrangianturbulence,structure<br />
formationandshearflowsinturbulentsystems,turbulencecontrol,liquidmetalandplasmadynamos,<br />
planetarydynamos,aswellasturbulenceinastrophysicalsystems.Thetalksareavailableontheinternet<br />

Thequiteuniquescopeofthemeetingsparkedalotofinterestinternationally,sothatitwasoverbooked<br />
byaboutafactoroftwo. AmongthemostprominentspeakerswereProfs. Bodenschatz,Brizard,<br />
Büchner,Carati,Christensen,Cowley,Eckhardt,Falkovich,Farge,Forest,Grauer,Hammett,Hansen,<br />
Hasinger,Jones,Krommes,Lathrop,Peinke,Pinton,Pumir,Rüdiger,Schlickeiser,Schneider,Schumacher,Shats,Stroth,Terry,Tilgner,Tsinober,Vassilicos,Wilkinson,andZimbardo.Atthesametime,<br />
alargenumberoftalentedyoungerscientistspresentedveryinterestingoralandpostercontributions.<br />
TheparticipantscamefromavarietyofdifferentEuropeanandnon-Europeancountriesincludingthe<br />
US,Australia,Japan,Russia,Brasil,Argentina,andIndia.<br />
Accordingtothefeedbackoftheparticipants, themeetingwasveryvaluableforlearningfromand<br />
reaching out to the neighboring communities, and for establishing new contacts and connections.<br />
Puttingone’sownresultsintoabroaderperspectivewasconceivedashelpfulandimportant.Numerous<br />
cross-disciplinarytopicswerediscussed,andcommonlinksdiscovered. Peoplewhichhadoftenbeen<br />
referring to each other’s publications met personally for the first time. Also, a renewed sense of<br />
togethernessemergedfromthesetwoweekswhichmightwellbethebasisforfurthercommonactivities<br />
andprojects.Overall,themeetingmaythusbejudgedasverysuccessful.<br />

Thefocusofthisworkshopwasonrecentdevelopmentsinthefieldofopticalmicrocavities,witha<br />
specialemphasisontheirrelationtootheropenquantumsystems. Theworkshopbroughttogether<br />
experimentalistsandtheoreticians,laserandmathematicalphysicists,researchersfromKoreaandJapan<br />
withEuropean(mostlyGerman)physicists,and,lastnotleast,thevariousgroupsworkingonthissubject<br />
intheDresdenresearchinstitutions.Whereaswehadoriginallyanticipatedabout20-30participants,the<br />
workshopwassowellreceivedthateventuallyupto50peoplegatheredinthelecturehall.Theratherlong<br />
coffeebreaks,postersessions,andexcursionwereverywellreceivedandusedforintensivediscussions.<br />
Theposterpresenters, mainlyPhD-students, appreciatedtheopportunitytointroducetheirworkin<br />
five-minutesflashtalksduringaspeciallyassignedsession(thatfilledthegapcausedbytheabsenceof<br />
HenningSchomerusthatresultedfromvolcanoashandflightcancellation).Alltalkswereofhighquality<br />
andthepostersessionwasusedforactiveandlivelydiscussionnotonlybytheyoungerparticipants.<br />
Theaimsoftheworkshopwere: (i)toshareknowledgeandfosterfurtherresearchcollaborationon<br />
topicalproblemsinopticalmicrocavities,(ii)toreviewthemostrecenttheoreticalandexperimental<br />
advances,(iii)tomaketheconnectionbetweenrealopticalsystems(wheretheopennessarisesfromthe<br />
dielectricnatureofacavity)andabstractopenquantummappingsystems(wheretheopeningissetby<br />
handandthereforeallowsaneasiercontrol,understanding,andtailoringoftheproperties).<br />
