Chaosat mpipks.RecentlyDr.E.AltmannarrivedtosetuptheOtto-HahngroupDynamicalSystems<br />
andSocialDynamics. TheInternational<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>ResearchSchoolDynamicalProcessesinAtoms,<br />
MoleculesandSolidswassuccessfullyrenewedforasecondsixyearperiod.<br />
Theinstitutehostsapproximately100-150long-termguestscientistsatanygiventime,togetherwith<br />
1200-1500short-termguestswhoannuallyparticipateintheworkshopandseminarprogram. Thenew<br />
wingoftheinstitutehasquicklyturnedintoanewandvibrantfocalpointofmeetings,postersessions,<br />
discussionsandcollaborations.<br />
TheBoardofTrusteeshassupportedtheworkoftheinstitutesince1995,thusprovidingimportant<br />
connectionstotheState,theCityandtheAcademia.Theresearchactivitiesoftheinstitutehavebeen<br />
accompaniedbyaScientificAdvisoryBoardsinceJune1996.<br />
1.2 ResearchAreasandStructureofthe<strong>Institut</strong>e<br />
Theresearchoftheinstituteinthefieldofthephysicsofcomplexsystemsrangesfromclassicalto<br />
quantumphysicsandfocusesonthreemainareas,whichcorrespondtotheactivitiesinthethreedivisions:<br />
• Withthehelpofsemiclassicalmethods,thedivisionFiniteSystemsheadedbyProf.Rostfocuses<br />
onthenonlineardynamicsofatoms,moleculesandclusters.<br />
• ThedivisionBiologicalPhysicsheadedbyProf.Jülicherstudiesbiologicalsystemswithtoolsof<br />
statisticalphysicsandnonlineardynamics.<br />
• ThedivisionCondensedMatterheadedbyProf.Moessnerstudiestheclassicalandquantumstatisticalmechanicsofcondensedmatter.<br />
Furthermore, fourresearchgroupsbroadenandstrengthentheworkofthecorrespondingdivisions.<br />
Additionalgroupsinterpolatewiththeirresearchbetweenandaddtotheabovelistedresearchtopics,<br />
andestablishresearchlinkswithotherinstitutions:<br />

• The<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>FellowgroupChaosandQuantumChaosisheadedbyProf.RolandKetzmerick<br />
(TUDresden)andlinkstheresearchworkat mpipkswiththeTechnischeUniversitätDresden.<br />
• TheOtto-HahngroupDynamicalSystemsandSocialDynamicsisheadedbyDr.EduardoAltmann.<br />
Itinterpolatesresearchbetween mpipksandtheTechnischeUniversitätDresden.<br />
• Theonlypermanentresearchgroup,headedbyProf.Kantz,isworkingonNonlinearTimeSeries<br />
Analysis. Here,methodsareappliedanddeveloped,relatedtovariousaspectsofclassicalchaos,<br />
whichplayanimportantrolealsoforresearchonsemiclassicaltopics.<br />
Finally,ajointresearchprogramPhysicsofBiologicalSystemsofthe mpipksandthe<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong><strong>Institut</strong>e<br />
ofMolecularCellBiologyandGenetics(MPI-CBG)comprisesthreecloselyinteractingJuniorResearch<br />
Groups.Thesejointresearchgroupsbuildacloselinkbetweenbothinstitutestopromotecollaborative<br />
workonthephysicsofcells:<br />
