3.3.5 JointWorkshopProgram<br />
Since2008 mpipkshasbeenrunningathenewworkshopprogram,TrendsinComplexSystems(TCS),<br />
togetherwiththerecentlyfounded<strong>Institut</strong>eforCross-DisciplinaryPhysicsandComplexSystems(IFISC)<br />
atPalmadeMallorca,Spain.Thereisastrongoverlapininterdisciplinaryandstrategicresearchtopics<br />
pursuedatIFISCand mpipks. InadditionIFISCdecidedtoestablishaworkshopprogram,usingthe<br />
experienceofthesuccessfulworkshopprogramimplementedat mpipks.MembersofIFISCand mpipks<br />
havebeenconductingjointresearchactivitiesforseveralyearsalready.<br />
ThejointprogramTrendsinComplexSystems(TCS)consistsofaseriesofIFISC-mpipksworkshops<br />
inMallorcaandDresden. EachyearoneworkshopisconductedinDresden,andoneinMallorca. The<br />
fundingissplitinevenparts. Toensureasmoothoperationand mpipksqualitystandardsfromthe<br />
beginning,wehaveprovidedsubstantialtransferofexperienceinlogisticmanagementoftheorganization<br />
ofworkshopsat mpipkstothepartnerinstituteIFISC.Inparticular,thepreparationoftheworkshopsin<br />
Mallorcaisdoneinpartsat mpipksandastaffmemberoftheVisitorsProgramsupportstheorganizational<br />
workduringaworkshopinPalma.<br />
Thefirstandsecondcallsforproposalswereverysuccessful. Wereceivedalargenumberofworkshop<br />
proposalsofhighquality. Arefereeboardwithinternationalexpertshelpedwiththeevaluationofthe<br />
proposals.In2009weconductedtheworkshopSynchronizationandMultiscaleComplexDynamicsinthe<br />
BraininDresdenandtheworkshop150YearsafterDarwin: FromMolecularEvolutiontoLanguagein<br />
Palma.In2010theworkshopLivingOrganismsinFlows:FromSmallScaleTurbulencetoGeophysical<br />
FlowstookplaceinPalma,andtheworkshopTimingandDynamicsinBiologicalSystemsinDresden.<br />
Thesuccessoftheprogramwasevident,andwecansafelystatethatwereachedalloftheabovegoals.<br />
