MOLX09andMOLX10havebeenorganizedwithmembersofthe<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>AdvancedStudyGroupat<br />
theCenterofFreeElectronLasersinHamburg(MP-ASG@CFEL)as2.5daysbrainstormingmeetings.<br />
Theideaforthefirstmeetingin2009wastogeneratenewideasfromthetheoreticalsideforinnovative<br />
experimentswiththenewlightsources. TopicshadafocusonsmallersystemsunderadvancedX-ray<br />
light.<br />
Tosparkdiscussionsandactasathinktanksaspecialformatofthemeetingwaschosen:Eachspeaker<br />
wasaskedtoprepareslidesforabout20minuteswhile60minuteswerereservedforhisentirecontributions<br />
-questionsandinterruptionswereencouragedatanytime.Tofurtherstimulatediscussions,thenumber<br />
ofparticipantswasrestrictedtoabout30,groupedinahalfcirclearoundtheblackboardandthescreen<br />
withonlytorows.ParticipantsrangedfromPhDstudentstoexperiencedresearchers.<br />
Mostparticipantsexpressedenthusiasticsupportforthisformatandhadthefeelingtheytookhome<br />
muchmorethanfromordinaryworkshops.Thissuccessmotivatedasecondmeetinginthesameformat<br />
(thistimealsotheposterswerepresentinthesameroomthroughouttheworkshop). However,the<br />
topicwasquitedifferentandfarmorechallenging:WhataretheopportunitiesforshortX-raypulsesto<br />
elucidatethedynamicsoflargemoleculesandassembliesinanenvironment,typicallyasolution?<br />

Theworkshoptookplaceatthe mpipksfromSept.28untilOct.1,2009,andwasorganizedbyRoland<br />
Bennewitz,HendrikHölscher,PeterReimann,andAndréSchirmeisen.Themainobjectiveofthisfocus<br />
workshopistobringtogetherpractitionersfromseveralrelatedfields,latelyevolvingintosimilardirections<br />
andthuscallingforaforumtoexchangethosenewlyupcomingideasonnanoscaledissipation.Particular<br />
emphasizehasbeenputonfrictionforcemicroscopy,non-contactatomicforcemicroscopy,dynamic<br />
forcespectroscopy,andrelatedtopicslikecellrollingandadhesion,macroscopicfrictionandfracture,<br />
andirreversibilityperse.<br />
Therewere32invitedtalks, 14postercontributions, and3participantswithoutcontribution. The<br />
workshopattractedparticipantsfrom3continentsand14differentcountries.SinceseveralPhD-students<br />
andyoungerpost-docspresentedtheirresultsastalksandposter,weareconvincedthattherewasagood<br />
balancebetweencontributionsbyestablishedseniorresearchers,youngerpost-docsandPhD-students.<br />
AfirsthighlightoftheworkshopwasthecolloquiumtalkbyRobertW.Carpick(UniversityofPennsylvania),entitled“Newinsightsintodissipativeprocesses:<br />
Damping,adhesion,friction,andwearatthe<br />
nanometerandatomicscale”,showingthatsurfacesandinterfacesbecometheprimaryregionswhere<br />
energyisdissipated,butthattheessentialunderlyingphysicsisstillnotsatisfactorilyunderstoodindetail.<br />
Afterthecolloquiumtalk,averyvividandinspiringpostersessiontookplaceuntillateevening.<br />
AsafurtherhighlightwementionthespecialfinaltalkbyMichaelUrbakh(TelAvivUniversity)onthe<br />
subject“Temperaturedependenceofnanoscalefriction”.Thistalksummarizedandexemplifiedinavery<br />
convincingmannertheinitialmainideaoftheconference,namelytobringtogetherpractitionersfrom<br />
differentfields–inparticularnanofrictionandbiophysics–latelyevolvingalmostindependentlyofeach<br />
otherintosimilardirectionsandthuscallingforatimelyforumtoexchangethosenewlyupcomingideas.<br />
