Thisyear’satomicphysicsconferencebroughttogetherexperimentalistsandtheoristsfromvariousareas<br />
inatomicandmolecularphysics. Whilethefirsthalfofthemeetingwasdevotedtotimelytopicsof<br />
generalinterest,thesecondhalffocusedonthequantumdynamicsofmolecularmotion.Wehadmore<br />
than80participantsfrommainlyEuropeancountries,aswellasafewvisitorsfromoverseas.Theprogram<br />
consistedof42invitedtalks,eachonewith15minutesofallocateddiscussiontime. OnTuesdayand<br />
Thursdaywehadpostersessionswheremorethan40posterswerepresented. Theensuingdiscussions<br />
continuedwellintothelateevening.<br />
ThemeetingstartedoutonMondaywithavarietyoftopicsofcurrentinterest,thushighlightingthe<br />
breadthofpresentdayatomicandmolecularphysics. Weheardtalksonultra-coldatomsinoptical<br />
lattices,onevidenceforelectronicentanglementinthedecayproductsofdimers,andonenergytransfer<br />
onquantumaggregatestonameafew. Theinstitute-widecolloquiumtalkwaspresentedbyReinhard<br />
Drner,whoexplainedhowtwolooselyboundatomscanbeionizedwithasinglephotonintheCOLTRIMS<br />
experimentpioneeredbytheirgroup. Thetopicofphoto-ionizationwastakenuponTuesday,with<br />
presentationsonaultra-fastionizationprocessesinsystemsrangingfromheliumnano-dropletsandpolyatomicmoleculestometalclusters.ThegeneralprogramwasroundedoutonWednesdaywithtalkson<br />
optimallycontrolledphasegatesinopticallatticesandtimeresolvedspectroscopyamongstothers.<br />
ThesecondhalfofthemeetingbeganonWednesday,focusingonthequantumdynamicsofmolecular<br />
motion.Thepresentationscoveredrecentbreakthroughsinmanipulatingthemotionandtheorientation<br />
ofmolecules,rangingfromdimerstolargebiochemicalspecies.Suchtasksarerequirede.g.forstudying<br />
state-resolvedreactionsandfordemonstratingmolecularentanglement,asanumberoftalkspointed<br />
out. Themeetingbroughtexpertsfromthefieldsofdeceleratingandtrappingmoleculesincontact<br />
withspecialistsonmolecularcoolingandalignment,andwithresearchersworkingontheinterferometry<br />
ofmolecularmatterwavesandonmolecularcollisionandreactionstudies. Itbecameclearthatthese<br />
differentcommunitiesshareaninterestincontrollingmolecularquantumdynamics,andtheensuing<br />
discussionsledtoanexchangeofideasbetweenthevariousfields.<br />
