settingupthedivisionFiniteSystems. HeappointedDr.A.Buchleitnerasheadofaresearchgroup<br />
NonlinearDynamicsinQuantumSystems. AfterDr.Dolgacceptedanofferforaprofessorshipatthe<br />
UniversityofBonnin2000,Dr.U.BirkenheuerwasappointedashissuccessorinMarch2000. Dr.K.<br />
RichtersoonafterwardsalsoacceptedtheofferofachairforTheoreticalPhysicsattheUniversityof<br />
Regensburg.ThisconcludedtheJuniorResearchGroupQuantumChaosandMesoscopicSystems.To<br />
continuethesuccessfulworkinthisresearchfieldwithmodifiedpremises,Dr.H.Schomerus(Leiden)was<br />
appointedasheadofanewJuniorResearchGroupWavesinComplexMediaandMesoscopicPhenomena<br />
inNovember2000.<br />
2001-2002 •Toaccountfortheincreasingdemandforbuildingbridgesbetweenphysicsandbiology,<br />
Dr.F.Jülicher(Paris)wasappointedasheadofthethirddivisionBiologicalPhysicsin2001. Shortly<br />
afterwards,tworesearchgroupsonPhysicsofBiologicalandSoftMatterheadedbyDr.R.Everaers<br />
(Mainz),andBiologicalPhysicsofOlfaction: FromGenestoNetworksheadedbyDr.M.Zapotocky<br />
(NewYork)startedtheiractivitieswithinthethirddivisionin2002. ThedivisionFiniteSystemsalso<br />
continuedtobroadenitsresearchspectrumbyappointingDr.A.Becker(Bielefeld)asheadofthenew<br />
researchgroupNonlinearProcessesinStrongFieldsin2002.<br />
2003-2004 •In2003Dr. S.Kümmel(NewOrleans)startedtheactivitiesofanEmmyNoether-Group<br />
ElectronicStructureofFiniteSystems. Itwasfollowedin2004bysettingupaJuniorResearchGroup<br />
PhysicsofCellDivisionheadedbyDr.K.Kruse(Dresden).Hisgroupwasthefirstofthreeresearchgroups<br />
withinajointresearchprogramPhysicsofBiologicalSystemsinitiatedtogetherwiththe<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong><br />
<strong>Institut</strong>eforMolecularCellBiologyandGenetics(MPI-CBG)inDresden. AsecondJuniorResearch<br />
GroupMechanicsofCellDivisionofthisjointresearchprogramwasstartedattheendof2004byI.M.<br />
Tolić-Nørrelykke(Firenze)whoworksexperimentallyattheMPI-CBG.Theconstructionofanextension<br />
totheinstitutebuildingwasstartedintheyear2004. Dr. M.Bärtookupapositionasadepartment<br />
headatthe<strong>Physik</strong>alisch-TechnischeBundesanstaltinBerlininthefallof2004.<br />
2005-2006 •In2005Dr. S.KümmelacceptedaprofessorshipatUniversityofBayreuth,andDr. H.<br />
SchomerusacceptedafacultypositionatLancasterUniversity.Dr.M.Hentschel(Regensburg)started<br />
theactivitiesofanEmmyNoethergroupManyBodyEffectsinMesoscopicSystems. Dr. S.Grill<br />
(Berkeley)completedthejointresearchprogramofthe mpipksandtheMPI-CBGbystartingtheJunior<br />
ResearchGroupMotorSystems. Hisgroupisaffiliatedwithbothinstitutesanddoesboththeoretical<br />
andexperimentalwork.TheInternational<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>ResearchSchoolDynamicalProcessesinAtoms,<br />
MoleculesandSolidsstartedoperationin2005. ItattractsPhDstudentsfrommanycountriesandis<br />
operatingjointlywiththeTechnicalUniversityDresden,the<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong><strong>Institut</strong>eforChemicalPhysics<br />
ofSolids,theLeibniz<strong>Institut</strong>eforSolidStateandMaterialsResearchDresden,theForschungszentrum<br />
Rossendorf,the<strong>Institut</strong>eforLowTemperatureandStructureResearchatthePolishAcademyofSciences<br />
Wroclaw,the<strong>Institut</strong>eofOrganicChemistryandBiochemistryPrague,andthe<strong>Institut</strong>eofChemical<br />
TechnologyPrague. Thenewwingoftheinstitutewascompletedattheendof2005. Itprovidesnew<br />
officespaceandanewseminarroom.In2006,Dr.K.KruseandDr.R.Everaersacceptedprofessorships<br />
attheUniversityofSaarbrückenandtheÉcolenormaleSupérieureinLyon.<br />
2007-2008 •DuringthisperiodProf.P.Fulderetiredfromhispositionasadirectorof mpipksandasthe<br />
headofthedepartmentElectronicCorrelations.Prof.R.Moessnerwasappointedasanewdirector,and<br />
startedtosetuphisdepartmentCondensedMatterinthebeginningof2008.Dr.A.Beckeracceptedthe<br />
offerofaJILAfellowtogetherwithafacultypositionattheUniversityofColorado,Dr.A.Buchleitner<br />
tookthechairforquantumopticsandstatisticsattheUniversityofFreiburg,andDr. M.Zapotocky<br />
movedtoapermanentpositionatthe<strong>Institut</strong>eofPhysiologyoftheCzechAcademyofSciences. In<br />
return,severalnewgroupswereinstalled.In2007Dr.T.Grossjoined mpipkstoheadthejuniorresearch<br />
groupDynamicsofBiologicalNetworks,andDr. B.Lindnersetuptheactivitiesoftheresearchgroup<br />
StochasticProcessesinBiophysics. Inthesameyear,Dr. S.Skupinstartedhisjuniorresearchgroup<br />
ComputationalNonlinearandRelativisticOptics,withcloselinkstotheForschungszentrumRossendorf.<br />
In2008theresearchgroupComplexDynamicsinColdGaseswasfoundedandheadedbyDr.T.Pohl,<br />
andtheresearchgroupNewStatesofQuantumMatterwasfoundedandheadedbyDr.A.Läuchli.In<br />
theendof2008Dr.S.Kirchnercameto mpipkstoheadthejuniorresearchgroupCollectivePhenomena<br />
inSolidStateandMaterialsPhysicswhichisoperatingjointlywiththeneighboring<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong><strong>Institut</strong>e<br />
fortheChemicalPhysicsofSolids.<br />
