isgoingtoplayavitalroleinnewemergingfieldsofscienceandtechnology,forinstance,because<br />
thespeedofmoderndataprocessingdoesnotallowtoneglectfinitepropagationtimesofsignalsany<br />
more.TheworkshopDelayedComplexSystems(DCS09)addressedawiderangeofsuchtopics,coveringfundamentalaspectsandapplications.Wethinkthisinterdisciplinaryworkshopmaystimulatefuture<br />
developmentsandwillencouragenewinteractionsbetweendifferentlinesofresearchwithinthisrapidly<br />
expandingvibrantfieldofdelayedcomplexsystems.Theworkshopwasverygenerouslysupportedbythe<br />
<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong><strong>Institut</strong>eforthePhysicsofComplexSystems. Wehavereceivedanenormousamountof<br />
positivefeedbackfromtheparticipants,andtheworkshophasbeenseenasanoverallsuccess. mpipksis<br />
widelyknownforitsexcellentworkshopandseminarprogramwhichismanagedtothehigheststandards.<br />
Thesupportbythelocalorganisationcommittee,inparticularbyMs. Roscina,wasextraordinary,and<br />
theperfectorganisationoftheeventwasappreciatedbyallparticipants.Weasscientificcoordinatorsof<br />
theworkshopareextremelygratefulto mpipksforhavingbeengiventheopportunitytoorganiseDCS09<br />
atthe<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong><strong>Institut</strong>e.<br />
Theneweraofcomplexitysciencefacestwochallenges,namelydealingwiththenontrivialtopologyof<br />
interactingsubunits,andthechallengecausedbytimedelaywiththeassociateddynamicstakingplacein<br />
infinitedimensionalphasespaces. Withinthelastfifteenyearstheresearchactivitieshaveconsiderably<br />
increasedasmanynewapplicationshaveemergedindifferentareas, suchaselectronicengineering,<br />
controllingchaos,laserphysics,orneuroscience.Inparticular,therearestrikinganalogiesbetweenlasers<br />
andneuralsystemsinbothofwhichdelayeffectsareabundant. Thedynamicsofcomplexsystems<br />
withtimedelayisthusoneoftheemergingfieldsindynamicalsystemstheorywithahighimpacton<br />
applicationsinscienceandengineering. Theworkshopaddressedthisissueonaverybroadbasis. The<br />
eventcoveredbothapplicationsandexperimentsaswellasmathematicalfoundations. Theworkshop<br />
hadaparticularfocusoninterdisciplinaryscience,bringingtogetherresearchersfromdifferentscientific<br />
disciplinestostimulatecross-fertilizationofresearch. Keyparticipants: Theverygeneroussupportby<br />
mpipksenabledustoinvitemorethan30invitedspeakers,allworldleadingexpertsintheirfield,22of<br />
whomgavekeynotereviewtalks.Amongthesemaincontributionsafewwerehighlightedbyeveningand<br />
openinglectures,andthe mpipkscolloquium.<br />
75participantsfrom22countriesattendedtheworkshop. Duetothegeneroussupportby mpipkswe<br />
couldallocatesubstantialresourcestosupportyoungresearchers,i.e. PhDstudentsandpost-docsat<br />
anearlystageoftheircareer. Itwasverymuchappreciatedthatwecouldofferpartialsupportfor<br />
travelexpenses,evenfornon-invitedspeakers.Wegaveprioritytorequestsfromyoungresearchersfrom<br />
developingcountries.<br />
SelectedplenarytalkswillbepublishedbytheendofthisyearasathemeissueonDelayedComplex<br />
SystemsinthePhilosophicalTransactionsoftheRoyalSocietyA.Thethemeissuewillconsiderablycontributetothedisseminationofthescientificresultsoftheworkshop.<br />
Fromaawidercross-disciplinary<br />
perspectivetheworkshopwasquitesuccessfulinestablishinglinksbetweendifferentscientificcommunities,inparticularwithregardstofundamentalaspectsinmathematics,engineeringandexperimental<br />
laserphysics,aswellasneuroscience.Thisclaimissupportedbytheoutcomeoftheveryfruitfulround<br />
tablediscussiononfuturetrendsininnonlineardynamicswithdelaywhichwasheldattheworkshop.<br />
Thus,academicbeneficiariesarealreadyvisiblebyenhancingandstimulatingresearchacrossdifferent<br />
disciplines,inparticularlinkingsciencewithapplicationsoftechnologicalrelevance. Inthatrespectthe<br />
workshopmayevenhaveconsiderablesocio-economicimpactonalongertimescale,byknowledgetransferofmoderndevelopmentsincomplexdynamicalsystemstheoryfromsciencetotechnology.<br />

ThisworkshopsurveyedrecentadvancesandongoingresearchacrossthefieldofDelaydifferentialequations(DDEs),withparticularemphasisonstatedependentDDEs,neutralDDEs,mixed-typefunctional<br />
differentialequationswithbothadvancedandretardedarguments, andproblemswithadifferentialalgebraicstructure,includingtheequationofmotionofachargedparticleintheaction-at-a-distance<br />
electrodynamics.Statedependentdelayequationsariseinmanyapplications,butfalloutsidethescope<br />
