inDresden,andithassincetakenplaceinParis,AmsterdamandHeidelberg,followedbyDresdenagain<br />

thisyear. Themainfocusofthismeetingwastobringtogetherstudents,postdocsandPIsthatapply<br />

modernexperimentalandtheoreticalapproachestosolveproblemsinphysicalbiology.Generally,aspecificemphasiswasputontopicsthatcloselyconnectexperimentalandtheoreticalapproaches.<br />

Topics<br />

discussedincludedcellmotility,cellpolarization,activepolargelsandactivemembranes. Specifically,<br />

oralpresentationscoveredtheMinsystemsofsubcellularorganization,microtubuledynamicsinvivoand<br />

reconstituted,meioticnuclearoscillationsinfissionyeast,symmetrybreakinginCaenorhabditiselegans,<br />

cleavagefurrowstability,lipidsorting,polymersomes,andproteinfriction.Aspecificaimofthismeeting<br />

wastoallowgraduatestudentstopresenttheirworkataratherearlystageoftheircareer,andall<br />

talksweregivenbygraduatestudents.Talksdisplayedaremarkablyhighlevelofquality.Postdocsand<br />

otherattendeespresentedtheirworkatapostersession,whichwasalargeemphasisofthismeeting,<br />

withalmost60presentedposters.Withover90participantsfroallfourinstitutions,thismeetingwasa<br />

largesuccess.Manynovelresearchtopicswerediscussed,andahostofnewcollaborationsbetweenthe<br />

respectiveparticipantsweresparked.Thismeetingisofcentralinfluencetothegrowingfieldofphysical<br />

biology,itsetsthestandardofhowresearchshouldbedoneinthisrelativelynovelfieldofresearch.<br />

BlochoscillationsandLandau-Zenertunnelingarethefundamentalpropertiesofquantumdynamicsof<br />

aparticleinaperiodicpotentialsubjecttoanexternalstaticforce. Thewave-particledualismleadsto<br />

acompletelycounterintuitivebehaviouroftheBloch-oscillatingwavepacket-particle.Sincemanyyears<br />

thisbehaviourattractedsubstantialinterestinitsdeeptheoreticalunderstandingandclearexperimental<br />

observation.ThemainpurposeofthisInternationalSeminarandWorkshopwastobringtogetherleading<br />

expertsinthestudyofBlochoscillationsandLandau-Zenertunnelingindierentsystemsandmaterials,<br />

suchassemiconductorsuperlatticesanddevicesforhotelectrons,opticalwaveguidearrays,optical<br />

superlatticesandphotoniccrystalsforphotonicwavepackets,ultrasonicsuperlatticesandsuperlattices<br />

madeofacousticmicro-andnanocavitiesforacousticandphononicwavepackets,opticallatticesfor<br />

ensemblesofultracoldatomsandBose-Einsteincondensates.TheSeminar(April14-May01,2009)<br />

wasdevotedtolectures,researchworkandsynergeticdiscussions. DuringtheSeminar,severalinvited<br />

andcontributedspeakers(Bastard, Cataliotti, Holthaus, Ishkanyan, Jusserand, Khomeriki, Kolovsky,<br />

Krimer,Manevitch,Oberthaler,O’Dell,Renk,Ruo,Weitz)havegivencomprehensivelecturesforyoung<br />

researchers,researchersfromthe mpipksandparticipantsofoureventfromdierentfieldsofphysics.<br />

Eachweekaround15participantsattendedSeminarlectures.DuringtheWorkshopweek(May04-08,<br />

2009),theinvitedandcontributedtalkswerefocusedonthefundamentalconcepts,appealingphysical<br />

analogiesandinterdisciplinaryexchangeofideas,aswellasonnovelapplicationsofBlochoscillations<br />

andLandau-Zenertunnelinginabroadspectrumofmodernmaterialsandactualsystems. Thetotal<br />

numberofparticipantswasmorethan60comingfromallovertheworld.Theparticipantsrepresented<br />

anappropriatemixtureofseniorscientistsandlessexperiencedyoungresearchers.Theprogramprovided<br />

opportunitiestobothgroupstointeractonvariouslevelsonthespecifictopicsinthebroadscopeof<br />

theevent. Inparticulartheyoungresearchershavebeengiventhechancetointeractandtopresent<br />

themselvesduringthepostersessionswhichhavebeenorganizedalongwiththeworkshopprogram. In<br />

additionseveraltalkshavebeengivenbythenextgenerationscientistaswell. Thegivenpresentations<br />

representedabalancedmixtureofthedifferenttargetedfieldsofphysicsinwhichBlochOscillations<br />

andLandau-ZenerTunnelingcanbeobserved.Forhistoricalreasonssemiconductorsupperlatticeshad<br />

beeninthefocusofmanyscientists(Alekseev,Allen,Bastard,Beltram,Dignam,Domnguez-Adame,<br />

Fromhold,Hyart,Kosevich,Manevitch,Renk,Wacker),withpresentationscoveringthedevelopmentof<br />

thisresearchsincethepioneeringworkofEsakiandTsuinearlyseventiesandnewapproachestothe<br />

interpretationofcomplexexperimentaldataincludingrecentstudiesofultrafasttransientphenomena<br />

inensemblesofphotoexcitedcarriers. Howeveritbecameclearthatexperimentalstudiesofultracold<br />

atomsandBose-Einsteincondensatesattractincreasinginterestwithanimpressivequalityimprovement<br />

oftheexperimentaldata(Biraben,Cirac,Daz,Fromhold,Gat,Holthaus,Kosevich,Kolovsky,Korsch,<br />

Morsch,Nagerl,Oberthaler,Salomon,Stringari,Weitz,Wimberger).Inadditiontherehavebeenpresentationsdevotedtonewlyemergingfields,likephotonicsystems(Desyatnikov,Dignam,Dreisow,Kavokin,<br />
