Perspectives. Theclosecollaborationbetweenthe mpipksandtheMPI-CBGhasinrecentyearsstimulatedmanynewresearchprojectsbetweenphysicsandbiology.Thegoalofthisresearchistodevelop<br />
quantitativeandtheoreticalapproachestounderstanddynamicprocessesincellsandtissues.Inorderto<br />
expandandfurtherdeveloptheseactivities,the<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>SocietyiscurrentlyplanningtocreateaCenterforSystemsBiologyofCellsandTissuesinDresdenthatisjointlyoperatedbythetwoinstitutes.Itis<br />
plannedtohireadditionalresearchgroupleadersaswellasanewdirectoratMPI-CBG.Thenewcenter<br />
willintegratetheoreticalactivitieswithexperimentalists.Anovelresearchactivitythatwillbeattracted<br />
tothenewcenterisimageinformaticswhichcomplementstheexistingactivitiesbetweentheoretical<br />
physicsandbiology. Bycombiningexperimentalbiologywiththeoreticalphysicsandcomputerscience,<br />
theactivitiesinDresdenwillbesignificantlystrengthened.Thiswillalsoallowustomovetowardsnew<br />
challengessuchasthestudyofthedynamicsofcellsandtissuesinthreedimensions.<br />

Inmanybiophysicalsystemswefaceafascinatingmixtureofnonlineardynamics,differentkindsoffluctuations,complexsignals,andadaptationprocessesinvolvingmultipletimescales.Inourgroupwestudyselectedproblemsfromneurobiologyandcellbiophysicsintheframeworkofstochasticnonlineardynamics.<br />
Besidesintensecomputersimulationsofsimplifiedbiophysicalmodels,wedevelopnovelanalytical<br />
approachesfortherespectivestatisticsofinteresttogaindeeperinsightsintotheunderlyingprocesses.<br />
Wehavetightcollaborationswithexperimentalcolleaguesandseekforapplicationsofouranalytical<br />
resultstohelpdesigningnewexperimentalparadigms.Specifically,weworkon:<br />
