Currently,ourlibrarystockconsistsofabout4800monographs,about16.000boundjournalvolumes<br />
and55scientificjournalsubscriptionsinprintandonline,whichcanbefoundintheonlinecatalogue.<br />
Theautomaticcheckoutsystempermitsinstituteemployeestoborrowbooksatanytime. Amodern<br />
BookeyemachineandXeroxmachineallowsprinting,scanningandcopying.<br />
Viathelibraryhomepage,ourusershaveaccesstoabout30.000onlinejournalsand40.000e-books,<br />
aswellasnumerousliteratureandfactualdatabases,onlineencyclopedias,dictionaries,theVirtual<strong>Max</strong><br />
<strong>Planck</strong>library,thee-DocServer,internationalcataloguesetc.<br />
Asanadditionalservice,thelibrarianhasaccesstoonlinedocumentdeliverysystems.Booksorreferences<br />
whicharenotavailableinthelibraryoronlinecanbeobtainedquickly,usuallywithin24-48hours,through<br />
asimpleweb-basedorderformandmanualprocessingbythelibrarian.<br />
Finally, thelibraryisalsoresponsibleforreportingthepublicationactivitiesof mpipks, e.g., forthe<br />
yearbookofthe<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>Societyorthescientificreport. AlsothedemandsofOpenAccessare<br />
relatedtothisactivities: TheoldMPGdatabasee-DocandthenewdatabasePubManwhichare<br />
institutionalrepositorieswithawidevarietyofservicesarefedwith mpipkspublicationsmetadataby<br />
thelibrarian.<br />
Alibrarysteeringcommitteeofscientistsrepresentingthedepartmentsandresearchgroupsofthe mpipks<br />
makessurethattheneedsofscientistsareoptimallyservedbythelibrary.Inquarterlymeetingsdecisions<br />
suchasnewjournalsubscriptionsaremade.<br />
Atpresentourlibraryconsistsoftwoseparatesections:themainlibrarywhereonecanfindbooksand<br />
thenewestjournalissuesandoldjournalvolumeswith8readingdesks,andthereadingroominthe<br />
secondfloor. Copiesofthemostimportantbooksandjournalsforeachgroupareavailabletherefor<br />
easyaccess.Thisroominvitesfordiscussionsandisverywellaccepted.<br />
Ourlibrary, aswellasmostothers, isinatransitionphasewheretheclassicalservicescontinueto<br />
beindispensablewhilenewmediaandnewservicesattainincreasedrelevance. Itisforeseeablethat<br />
printissuesofjournalsmightbefullyreplacedbyonlineaccessinafewyears,wheretheonlineaccess<br />
isguaranteedbythecentralizedMPDL.Instead, thelibrarywillbemoreandmoreinvolvedinthe<br />
disseminationofpublicationscreatedby mpipksmembersthroughOpenAccessandaninstitutional<br />
repository.<br />
