3.1 PhDProgram<br />
ThetrainingofPhDstudentsisoneofthecentraleducativetasksofthe mpipks.Itisrealizedthrougha<br />
largeinstitutePhDprogram,ourleadingroleintheIMPRSDynamicalProcessesinAtoms,Moleculesand<br />
Solids(seenextsection)andourparticipationintheIMPRSMolecularCellBiologyandBioengineering<br />
whichiscoordinatedbythe<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong><strong>Institut</strong>eforCellBiologyandGenetics.<br />
ProspectivePhDstudentshaveseveraloptionsofcontactingscientificadvisorsat mpipks.PhDpositions<br />
fundedthroughexternalgrantsareadvertisedinscientificjournalsandontheinternetpagesofthe<br />
institute.AdditionallythereisapermanentadvertisementofPhDpositionsfundedthroughtheVisitors<br />
Programontheinternetpagesoftheinstituteandinseveralinformationbooklets.Finally,asignificant<br />
partofPhDstudentsisrecruitedthroughpersonalcontactswithpotentialscientificadvisorsat mpipks.<br />
SincethestartofoperationoftheInternational<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>ResearchSchoolthenumberofPhDstudents<br />
substantiallyincreased.<br />
Therecruitmentstrategyiswelldocumentedinpreviousscientificreportsof mpipks. In2009wehad<br />
atotalof78PhDstudentsat mpipks,including51studentsfromabroad(thesenumberscountall<br />
students, alsothosewhofinishedtheirPhDstudiesorstartedtheirstudiesduringthatyear). The<br />
respectivenumbersfor2010wereatotalof97PhDstudentsat mpipks,including66studentsfrom<br />
abroad.Wecounted6successfulfinalPhDexamsfortheyear2009and9examsfortheyear2010.<br />
Besides their scientific work at mpipks our PhD students use several further types of activities to<br />
strengthentheiracademicandcommunicativeskills. InadditiontolecturecoursesofferedattheTU<br />
Dresdenthe mpipksprovideslecturecoursesonmoderntopicsoftheoreticalphysicsonaregularbasis.<br />
PhDstudentscanjoinworkshoptalksandseminarlecturesoftheWorkshopandSeminarProgramof<br />
mpipks. Manyofthemparticipateactivelyintheseeventsbypresentingshorttalksorposters. Our<br />
instituteorganizesannualPhDStudentDays(1-2days).Allstudentsof mpipksparticipateinthismeetingandpresentshorttalksontheircurrentresearchresults.<br />
APhDstudentexchangeprogramwith<br />
EastEuropeancountriessuchasPolandortheCzechRepublic,supportedbythe<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>Society,<br />
allowsourstudentstovisitcooperatingresearchgroupsandtopresenttalks,aswellastocoachvisiting<br />
PhDstudentsfromthosegroupsat mpipks.The mpipksoffersfinancialandlogisticsupportforjoining<br />
GermanlanguagecoursesforourPhDstudentsfromabroadinordertohelpwithintegrationintothe<br />
Germanspeakingcommunity.<br />
AgrowingnumberofPhDstudentspassesthefinalPhDexamsattheTUDresden.Still,somestudents<br />
obtainthePhDdegreefromvariousuniversitiesthroughoutGermany.AfterthePhDdegreemostofour<br />
studentscontinuetheirresearchworkbyacceptingpostdocpositionsatresearchinstitutionsinvarious<br />
countries.Asignificantpartisalsosuccessfullyapplyingforpositionsincompaniesinsuchareasasapplied<br />
research,computerscience,financeandconsulting. The mpipksorganizesregularalumnimeetingsof<br />
formerPhDstudentswithdiscussionroundstoprovideatransferofexperienceforourpresentPhD<br />
students.<br />
