Dolev(Weizmann)reportedonchargefractionalizationinthev=5/2FQHstate,ChristianPfleiderer<br />

(TUMunich)discussedSkyrmionlatticesinchiralmetalsandsemi-conductors,HidenoriTakagi(UniversityofTokyo/RIKEN)reportedonIroxidesincludingtheexperimentalobservationofquantumspin<br />

liquidbehaviorinNa4Ir3O8andexperimentalindicationsforatopologicalinsulatorinNa2IrO3.Satoru<br />

Nakatsujidiscussedunconventional,spinnematicphasesinNiGa2S4,andLaurensMolenkampreported<br />

ontheexperimentalobservationofthequantumspinHalleffectinHgTequantumwellstructures.These<br />

experimentaltalkswereputintobroadercontextbysomeimpressivetheoreticaltalksgivenbymanyof<br />

theworldleadersinthefield.AparticularhighlightwasthecolloquiumofMichaelFreedman(Microsoft,<br />

StationQ)onTopology,Physics,andComplexity:Thebirthingofthequantumcomputer,whichgave<br />

anintriguingperspectiveontopologicalquantumcomputation.<br />

Theseminarandworkshopwasattendedbymorethan125scientistsincludingalargegroupofjunior<br />

scientistswhoactivelycontributedinthediscussions.Thetwopostersessionswerelargelyshapedbythe<br />

contributionsofthesejuniorattendeesandwereattendedwellpasttheoriginallyscheduleddiscussion<br />

time.<br />

Thiseventwasbilledasajoint mpipks-APCTPworkshop,anditbenefittedfromthecollaboration,as<br />

theAPCTPwasabletoidentifythemostpromisingyoungscientistsinitscatchmentarea,thereby<br />

effectivelyenhancingthegeographicreachtothebenefitofallsidesinvolved. Asaresult,theevent<br />

assembledsomeofthemostpromisingyoungresearchersfromAsia,EuropeandNorthAmerica,the<br />

threeglobalhubsofcondensedmatterphysics.<br />

Insummary,theeventmanagedtoattractanoutstandinginternationalrosterofscientistsatverydifferentstagesintheircareers,rangingfromdoctoralstudentstoaFieldsmedalist.<br />

Theconceptfora<br />

workshoponthisbuddingfieldhasbeenconceivedinthesummerof2007,itstopicalityfurtherincreased<br />

overtime,anditbenefittedgreatlyfromdevelopmentsintheinterveningtwoyears:theprogramended<br />

upprovidingaplatformforanumberofnewandimportantdevelopmentsintherapidlyevolvingfieldof<br />

topologicalphasesofmatter.<br />

Mainfocus: Thisshortfocusworkshopdealtwiththeaccuracyofpredictionsinweatherandclimate.<br />

NumericalweatherpredictionsandclimatesimulationsrelyondetailedmodelsoftheEarth’satmosphere<br />

(andalsooceancurrentsinthecaseofclimate), whichareinitializedusingobservationaldataand<br />

subsequentlyintegratednumerically. Allaspectsofthisapproachinevitablycontaininaccuraciesand<br />

errors.Onthisworkshop,thedifferenterrorsourcesandtheirconsequenceswerediscussed,alongwith<br />

possiblewaystoreducetheseerrorsoratleasttoassesstheirmagnitude. Ingeneralterms,erroneous<br />

representationoftheunderlyingphysicsandtheinitialconditionleadtowrongmodeldynamicsand<br />

deviationsbetweenthestatisticsofpredictionandreality.<br />

seniorPhDstudentsorpostdocs.The20posterswerepresentedbyyoungerparticipants.Theyhadthe<br />

chancetogiveaverybriefoverviewoftheirposter(around2minutes)inaspecialsession,whichturned<br />

outtobeverysuccessful.<br />
