2007atthe mpipks. InApril2009,thegroupleaderStefanSkupinbecameanappointmentasCarl<br />
Zeiss JuniorProfessorforComputationalPhotonics attheFriedrichSchillerUniversityinJena. Due<br />
tothissecondengagement,StefanSkupinisonlytwodaysperweekpresentatthe mpipks,andit<br />
becamenecessarytoappointMickaelGrechasalong-termPost-Docandassistantgroupleader. The<br />
groupcurrentlyhoststwoPhDstudents,ChristianKöhlerandFabianMaucher. Moreover,YiqiZhang<br />
spentoneyearinthegroupasanexchangestudent(11/2009–10/2010,MPG-CASDoctoralPromotion<br />
Program).EduardoCabreraGranadovisitedthegroupforoneyearasaPost-Doc(03/2010–02/2011),<br />
andthevisitorsprogramenabledseveralshortervisitsofotherseniorscientists.<br />
Computationalphysicsisafastgrowingdiscipline,andrecentprogressincomputertechnologymakesit<br />
possibletosolvelargescalenumericalproblemswhichwerenottractableatallonlyadecadeago.More<br />
andmoresuper-computersbecomeavailableforfundamentalscience(see,e.g.,thenewAIMSclusterof<br />
the mpipksatRZG)andallowthesimulationofwholephysicalexperiments.Thisdevelopmentoffersa<br />
uniqueopportunitytoconductnovelandinnovativeresearch.<br />
