TheInternational<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>ResearchSchoolDynamicalProcessesinAtoms,MoleculesandSolids<br />
(hereafterreferredtoasIMPRS)hascompleteditsfirstfullfundingperiodofsixyearsfromJanuary<br />
2005toDecember2010. In2008itwasevaluatedbyanevaluationcommitteeappointedbythe<strong>Max</strong><br />
<strong>Planck</strong>Society. Basedontheverypositivereportfromthecommitteewehaveappliedforasecond<br />
fundingperiod,whichwasapprovedbythe<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong>SocietyinJanuary2011. Startingwiththe<br />
secondfundingperiodtheresearchfocuswillbeshiftedtomaintainapioneeringroleinthechanging<br />
scientificlandscapeofDresden,fordetailsseepage100.<br />

TheIMPRShasadmittedsofar94PhDstudents,38ofwhichhaveobtainedtheirdoctoraldegreeby<br />
theendof2010. Whileabout40%ofthestudentsareGermans,theother60%comefromallover<br />
theworld.ThepredominantcountriesoforiginareChina(7students),CzechRepublic(7),Poland(6),<br />
Ukraine(4),andIndia(4). Theaffiliationtotheparticipatingpartnersisasfollows,TUD:19,FZD:<br />
1,IFW:6,MPI-CPfS:3, mpipks: 14,ILTSR:2,IOCB&ICT:6. ThePolishstudentsareenrolledin<br />
Wroc̷lawuniversitiesandarefinancedbygrantsoftheKlaus-Tschirafoundation.TheCzecharemembers<br />
ofCzechAcademyofSciencesandarefinanciallysupportedbytheIMPRS.<br />
Scientificevents<br />
AftertheofficialopeningceremonyinSeptember2005westartedaseriesofannualIMPRSretreats<br />
heldinautumnatdifferentlocationsintheSächsicheSchweiz(seepicture).InthesemeetingsthePhD<br />
studentspresenttheirworkinextendedtalkstoprovokediscussionsamongallstudentsincludingthose<br />
workingindifferentfields.Furthermore,contactwithnewstudentsoftheIMPRSisinitiated.<br />
InordertocloselyintegrateourPolishandCzechbranchesweorganizedjointblockseminars.Thesewere<br />
devotedtospecialscientificsubjectspresentedbyourPolishandCzechpartners. Thefirstoneofthis<br />
serieswasorganizedbyourPolishpartnersinMay2006inWroc̷lawanddealtwithModernAspectsof<br />
Superconductivity.ThesecondonetookplaceintheCzechAcademyofSciencesinPragueinNovember<br />
2008andfocusedonBiomolecules: PhysicalPrinciplesandMechanisms. Bothseminarswereopento<br />
localstudents.<br />
Seminarandlectureprogram<br />
OneoftheregularmeetingpointsforallstudentsisthemonthlyIMPRSseminar. Eachseminarstarts<br />
withatalkgivenbyanIMPRSstudent,followedbyaninvitedtalkgivenbyanexternalspeaker. The<br />
externalspeakersareproposedbysupervisorsandstudentsfromtheparticipatingresearchgroupsand<br />
thuscoverthebroadscientificspectrumoftheIMPRS.<br />
ThelectureprogramfollowsthescheduleoftheTechnischeUniversitätDresdenwithwinter(October–<br />
February)andsummer(April–July)terms.Thelecturesaregivenbyprofessorsfromtheuniversityand<br />
