andbreaks. Femalegraduatestudentsandpostdocsinparticularwereobservedtonetworkextensively<br />
witheachotherandwithseniorparticipants,whichlaysthegroundworkfortheirfuturecollaborations.<br />
Overall,theweek-longmeetingallowedtheresearcherstospendafocusedperiodoftimediscussing<br />
theseissues,allowingthemdevelopideasforfutureresearchdirections,andtocapturethemomentum<br />
createdbytheseoftenindependentdevelopmentstakingplacearoundtheworld.<br />

Theworkshopandseminarwasenvisagedasanopportunitytoexploreemergingresultsattheinterface<br />
ofquantuminformation(Q.I.)theoryandcondensedmatterphysics,fromacondensedmatterpoint<br />
ofview. Itwasintendedthattheprogrammewouldplayatimelyroleinnucleatingtheemerging<br />
communityfocusingonthistopic.Theprogrammewasverysuccessfulinfulfillingthisgoal.Theevent<br />
wasperfectlytimedforthewidedisseminationofanumberofsignificantresultsthathaveemergedvery<br />
recently. Theinterestinthetopic,andthenumberofcondensedmatterphysicistsusingandstudying<br />
Q.I.-inspiredconcepts,haveonlyrecentlygrownlargeenoughtoprovidethecriticalmassnecessaryfor<br />
suchaprogramme.Thetwo-weekprogrammethusprovidedaninteractionopportunitythatwascrucial<br />
atthisstageofthedevelopmentofthefield. Thetopichasattractedsomeoftheleadingthinkersin<br />
condensedmattertheory,andthiswasreflectedintheconcentrationofprominenttheoristsamongthe<br />
participants. TheworkshopweekalsoincludedanumberofjuniorscientistsworkinginQ.I.groups;<br />
theprogrammeprovidedforthiscommunityamuch-appreciatedexposuretothecondensedmatter<br />
perspective. Format. Therewere26talksandacolloquiuminthefirst(workshop)week,and16talks<br />
andacolloquiuminthesecond(seminar)week.Theunusuallysparseworkshopweekprovidedexcellent<br />
opportunitiesfordiscussionandcollaboration,andtheparticipantsseemedtobenefitimmenselyfrom<br />
thisextratime. Thefirstweekhadtwoafter-dinnerpostersessions. Therewere45+postersputup,<br />
andtheaccompanyingvibrantdiscussionscontinuedwellbeyondthescheduledtime.Thesessionswere<br />
notorganizedbysubtopic;insteaddifferentsubtopicsweremixedintoeachsession. Thisseemedto<br />
workwellasparticipantsateachsessiongotexposuretoavarietyofemergingthemes. Therewere<br />
about80participantsinthefirstweekandabout25participantsinthesecond.Colloquia.IanAffleck,<br />
oneofthecoordinators,wasthespeakerforthefirstweekcolloquium,whichwasamajorhighlightof<br />
theweek. Thecolloquiumwasdeliveredtoapackedauditoriumandheavilyattended,notonlybythe<br />
workshopattendees, mpipksReport; Workshop&SeminarQICCMP10members,andother mpipks<br />
visitorsatthetime,butalsobypeoplefromneighboringDresdeninstitutes. Thetalkfocusedonthe<br />
phenomenonoftheKondocloudandonentanglementmeasuresusedtocharacterizetheKondocloud.<br />
ThesecondweekcolloquiumspeakerwasPaulFendley,whogaveanentertainingandinformativetalkon<br />
exactresultsonspinchains.Scientifichighlights.Ofthevariousaspectsdiscussedattheworkshop,we<br />
mentionbelowonlyafewthemes.Oneprominentdirectionwastheconnectionofentanglemententropy<br />
inmany-bodystatestomorephysicalconceptssuchasnoiseorfluctuations.Fradkin,LevitovandLehur<br />
gavereportsonthislineofwork. Afascinatingbutpoorly-understoodaspectistheconnectionofthe<br />
so-calledentanglementspectrumwiththespectrumorotherpropertiesofmany-bodysystems.Läuchli,<br />
Poilblanc, Regnault, Pollmann, and Bray-Ali introduced some cross-section of recent developments<br />
on entanglement spectra. Several speakers (Eisert, Barthel, Corboz, Verstraete, Heidrich-Meisner)<br />
reporteddevelopmentsincomputationaltechniquesortheiruse,e.g.,thedevelopmentoftensornetwork<br />
algorithmstotreatfermionicsystems.Impuritymodelsincondensedmatterarewidelyviewedashaving<br />
intricatelyentangledstates. Severalspeakersreportedtheuseofentanglementtocharacterizesuch<br />
states, ordesignstousetheentanglementinsuchsystems(Laflorencie, Sodano, Sorensen, Bose).<br />
Theorganizersmadesomeefforttohaveanexperimentalcomponenttotheworkshop,althoughthe<br />
topicisbyitsnaturetheory-orientedatthisstageofitsdevelopment. WeinfurterandAeppliprovided<br />
experimental highlights. There were also two reports from prominent condensed matter theorists<br />
(Joynt,Moessner)contributingintheotherdirection,i.e.,applyingcondensedmattertechniquesto<br />
Q.I.problems,respectivelythegraphisomorphismproblemandthequantumk-SATproblem.Anumber<br />
ofspeakersreportedoncontinuingdevelopmentsonentanglement/fidelityatquantumcriticalityorin<br />
particularcondensedmatterphases(Bonesteel,Misguich,JoelMoore,Refael,Schoutens,KunYang).<br />
