Scientificresults: Thestatementthatatmosphericmodelsareonlyanapproximationofreality,and<br />
thattheirdynamicsarethereforedifferentfromnature,isnotnew.However,thetalksofthisconference<br />
gaveadetailedandquantitativeimpressionofmodelerrorsandforecastaccuracy. Intermsofatmosphericmodelling,theaudiencewasratherbroad:Differenttimescales(weatherandclimate),different<br />
physical(sub-)systems(clouds,theatmosphere,andfullclimatemodels),differentintentions(precise<br />
weatherforecasts,longrunclimateprojections),differentmethodologies(statisticalpredictionanddownscalingschemes,ensembleoptimization,dataassimilationtechniques).<br />
Therefore,thisfocusworkshop<br />
stimulatedthediscussionbetweensub-communities. Itreflectedthestateoftheartanddemonstrated<br />
whichareasrequirestrongandconcertedeffortsinthefuture.Severalspeakersexpressedtheirconcern<br />
regardingthevalidityandthereforethevalueofdetailedglobalandregionalclimatepredictions,asfor<br />
examplepresentedinthelatestIPCCreportandissuedbylocalgovernments.<br />
Anumberoftopicsemergedwhich,webelieve,areofparticularinteresttothenonlineardynamicscommunity.Severalnewparadigmsweresuggested,suchascovariantLyapunovvectors,randomattractors,<br />
andseveralnewideasfordataassimilation.Adeeperstudyandthoroughassessmentoftheseconcepts<br />
couldbeaninterestingsubjectofresearchforthenonlineardynamicscommunity,andseveralcollaborationsemergedduringtheworkshop.Furthermore,theUniversityofHamburgpresentedtheirPortable<br />
UniversityModeloftheAtmosphere(PUMA).Thismodeliswelldocumented,simplecomparedtoother<br />
atmosphericmodels,andpossibletohandleevenforthenon–expert,yetitisarealisticmodelofatmosphericmotion.<br />
ThisrendersPUMAaveryinterestingtestbedfornewconceptsofnonlineardynamics<br />
methods.<br />

ThefocusoftheInternationalSeminarandWorkshop”Magnonics:FromFundamentalstoApplications”<br />
heldinDresdenfromAugust2ndto29th,2009,wasonthenewlyemergingfieldofmagnonicsashighlightedbythetitle.Thefieldencompassescurrentresearcheffortsaimingatmagneticmaterialswhose<br />
propertiesaretailoredonthenanoscaleandwherespinwaves(magnons)carryandprocessinformation.<br />
Theeffortsaddresstheinvestigationoffundamentalpropertiesaswellasthecreationofnovelmagnetic<br />
fieldcontrolleddevices.Magnonicsiscurrentlygainingmomentum,attractingmoreandmoreresearchers<br />
fromvarioussubfieldsofmagnetismandmaterialsresearch,aswellasmicrowaveengineering. So,the<br />
conferencewasverywelltimedandinfactwasthefirstinternationalconferenceofitskind.Duringthe<br />
seminaritwasannouncedthatasymposiumonmagnonicswasbeinginitiatedintheframeworkofthe<br />
APSMarchMeeting2010.<br />
Theeventwasverysuccessful,havingachieveditsmainaimofformingacommunityofmagnonics<br />
researchers. Researchersfrom19countriesandwithatotalnumberof86wereattendingtheevent.<br />
Theseminarandworkshopbroughttogether,both,expertswhoexhibitedworld-wideleadingpositions<br />
innanomagnetismandmagnonresearchaswellasyoungresearchersjustenteringthefield. Thepresentationscoveredthewholespectrumfromfundamentalmagnonicpropertiestotheirapplicationintheinformationtechnologies.Themainscientificresultoftheconferenceinthebroadersensewastheemergenceofmagnonicsasasister-fieldinthefamilyoffunctionalnano-materials,alsoincludingelectronics,<br />
photonics,phononics,plasmonicsetc.<br />
Theroundtablediscussionsheldinthecourseoftheseminar,both,providedafurtherimpetusforthe<br />
searchfornewconceptsaddressingthepracticalrealizationofmagnonicdevicesandhelpedtoidentify<br />
futurechallengesformagnonics. Ofparticularinterestweretalksofanddiscussionswithsuchsenior<br />
andwell-knownresearchersasProfessorsJosefBarnas,BobCamley,GennadiyMelkov,SergeyNikitov,<br />
AndreySlavin,andDanStancil,whohavecontributedrelevantworksonmagnonresearchsincedecades.<br />
Thescientific”newcomers”tothefieldofmagnonics,whoareinsomecaseswellestablishedinrelated<br />
sub-fieldsofmagnetism,presentedexcellentcontributions. BrighttalksweregivenbyAndriiChumak,<br />
VladislavDemidov,andAlexeyKimel.Theeventwasalsoveryusefulintermsofbothestablishingnew<br />
collaborationsandprovidingaforumforscientificdiscussionswithinexistingones. Forexample,inone<br />
case,atheoreticalmodelsuccessfullydescribingexperimentaldatapresentedduringtheworkshopwas<br />
developedduringthelifetimeoftheseminar!<br />
Theworkshophasreceivedasignificantpublicity,withseveralinvitationstopublishProceedingsandto<br />
preparebooksreceivedbyitsorganizersandparticipants. Afteracarefulconsideration,itwasdecided<br />
topublishaclusterofreviewarticlesdefiningthescopeofandthecurrentstateoftheartinmagnonics<br />
researchinJournalofPhysicsD:AppliedPhysics(tentativelyinApril2010). Finally,inspiredbythe<br />
