Almostalloftheinvitedspeakersexplicitlytookupthequovadis?theme,addressingfutureoptions<br />
andtasks. Itbecamequiteevidentthatthereisnotjustonesingledominantdirectionwhichthefield<br />
isgoingtotake,butratherthereexistseveralstrandswhicharelikelytobeexploredsimultaneously,<br />
stemmingfromrecentresultswhichwerediscussedindetailduringthetalks. Keytopicsincluded<br />
newlyemergingpossibilitiesforimagingsingleatomsinopticallattices,theexplorationofnonstandard<br />
latticegeometriesandofnewtrappingdevices,theobservationandexplanationofdynamicaleffects<br />
involvingsolitonsordeliberatelyperturbedcondensates,andthespecificbehaviourofaunitaryFermi<br />
gas. Withrespecttotheuseofultracoldatomsasquantumsimulators,amajorchallengenowliesin<br />
therealizationofevenlowertemperatures:Thepresentrecordof350Picokelvin(heldbeW.Ketterles<br />
group at MIT) still is by a factor of 2 or 3 higher than the temperatures required for emulating,<br />
e.g.,theXXZ-modelwithbosonsinopticallattices. Eachofthethreeeveningpostersessionsledto<br />
longandlivelydiscussionsamongtheparticipants. Lastbutnotleast,boththeexcursiontoMeissen<br />
andtheconferencedinnerprovidedwelcomerelaxation. Theconceptofthisquovadismeetingof<br />
bringingtogetherleadingexpertsfromseveralsubfields,andtoincludeasignificantfractionofPh.D.students,wasquitewellreceived;thebenefitsofstrengtheningthetiesbetweenthediversedirections<br />
ofcurrentcold-atomsresearchwereemphasizedseveraltimes. Wearegratefultothe<strong>Max</strong><strong>Planck</strong><br />
<strong>Institut</strong>eforthePhysicsofComplexSystemsforthegeneroussupportwhichhasmadethiseventpossible.<br />

Theworkshoptookplaceatthe mpipksinDresdenfromAugust23toAugust27,2010,andfocusedon<br />
anumberofimportantopenproblemsinthefieldofstronglycorrelatedelectronicsystems. Itbrought<br />
togethercuttingedgeresearchersintheareaofemergentquantumstatesincorrelatedelectronsystems.<br />
ThescopeoftheworkshopspannedalargenumberoftopicsincludingthephysicsofFe-pnictides,<br />
cuprates,frustratedmagnets,andtopologicalinsulators. Inaddition,thephysicsofthenewstatesof<br />
mattersuchasnematicand/ormetamagneticphases,andtheinterplaybetweenspin,charge,andorbital<br />
degreeoffreedomhavealsobeenaddressed. Duringtheworkshopanumberofphenomenologicaland<br />
microscopictheoriesofthesesystemshavebeendiscussedininformalbutseriousmanner.<br />
Over75participantsfromEurope,USA,Canada,andJapantookpartinthemeeting. Theprogram<br />
included40oralpresentations,bothinvitedandcontributed,aswellastwopostersessions. Theinterchangeofpointsofviewbetweenparticipantswithdistinctscientificinterestsgaverisetoahighly<br />
stimulatingatmosphere.Duringtheworkshop,anumberofnewandexcitingresultshavebeenpresented<br />
by,e.g.,LouisTailleferon“Fermisurfacereconstructionandquantumcriticalityincupratesuperconductors”,SubirSachdevonthephasediagramofthehightemperaturesuperconductors,KazuhiroKuroki<br />
“Anionheightasakeyparameterinthesuperconductivityofpnictidesandcuprates”,AshvinVishwanath<br />
on“TopologicalinsulatorsCorrelationeffectsandtopologicalfieldtheories”,MauriceRiceon“Akspace<br />
theoryforthecupratesuperconductors”,Yong-BaekKimon“Spinliquidandtopologicalinsulatorinfrustratedmagnets”.Manyother,especiallyyoung,participantspresentedtalksofhighqualityandshowed<br />
newandinterestingresults. Thetalks,discussions,andpostersatEQUAM10demonstratedthatthe<br />
fieldofcorrelatedelectronsisdevelopingrapidlyandhasgreatprospects.<br />
TwomainresultsoftheWorkshopare(i)afocusedexchangeofideasontherecentexperimentaland<br />
theoreticaldevelopmentsinthefieldofhigh-temperaturesuperconductivityandtheoriginofnon-Fermiliquidphysicsinstronglycorrelatedelectronsystems,and(ii)aninvolvementofyoungscientistsinthe<br />
discussionwhichhasstimulatednewresearchcollaborations.<br />
