All students in the major are required to take Biblical Studies 458<br />

Theology of Mission as a Bible elective. BBST 465 Integration Seminar,<br />

either Gospel and Culture or Church and Mission in Context, is<br />

required in the senior year.<br />

note: For the Intercultural Studies majors only, Anthropology<br />

200 is prerequisite to all anthropology coursework.<br />

Students who desire a concentration / certificate in TESOL (Teaching<br />

English to Speakers of Other Languages) are advised to check the<br />

TESOL and Applied Linguistics section of the catalog for requirements.<br />

They should also complete an application form and pick up a<br />

handbook from the TAL department.<br />

<strong>Biola</strong> and the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) at <strong>Biola</strong> provide a<br />

number of linguistic courses that can comprise a concentration for<br />

Intercultural Studies majors interested in language analysis / Bible<br />

translation. See TESOL and Applied Linguistics section of the catalog<br />

for these course descriptions.<br />

f I e l d I n t e r n s h I P<br />

Every Intercultural Studies major must participate in a cross-cultural<br />

/ overseas learning program. This may be fulfilled by taking<br />

an approved field internship which provides opportunity to apply<br />

skills studied in the classroom in a foreign environment Such an<br />

experience may be taken for credit. Students may also fulfill this<br />

requirement by participating in an approved <strong>Biola</strong> semester-abroad<br />

program. Those choosing the latter will not get additional academic<br />

credit but will take three more units of electives within the major.<br />

Whichever option a student chooses to fulfill this requirement, must<br />

be pre-approved by the student’s academic advisor.<br />

Minor<br />

An Intercultural Studies Minor is offered with the completion of 18<br />

units, 12 of which must be upper division, including Anthropology<br />

200. The student is expected to take BBST 458 for Bible elective.<br />

Students must consult with department adviser.<br />

Exploration of the foundational issues related to international<br />

and intercultural ministry, including foundational models<br />

of global Christian witness, spiritual giftedness, character<br />

development and spiritual formation, partnering with national<br />

leadership teams and partnerships and career tracks in global<br />

service.<br />

InCs 310 General Linguistics .................................................................3<br />

Introduction to the basic concepts in the scientific study of<br />

language, major areas of linguistic analysis, and several sub-<br />

areas of the field, including language in society. Material from<br />

English and a variety of other languages is used to provide a<br />

broad perspective.<br />

InCs 313 Language & Culture Learning .............................................3<br />

Techniques and activities to help a person be a more success-<br />

ful independent learner of a spoken language and the culture<br />

within which it is used. Practical experience in language and<br />

culture learning in a foreign-speaking community. Fee: $100.<br />

InCs 322 interpersonal and intercultural adjustment .................3<br />

Exploration of the crosscultural transition process, focusing<br />

upon healthy adjustment as a sojourner in a new culture. At-<br />

tention given to understanding and applying grace to oneself<br />

and others, discerning cultural values, conflict styles, social<br />

stratification and celebration.<br />

InCs 324 introduction to islam and islamic Theology ..................3<br />

An introductory survey of the Islamic faith and major themes<br />

in Muslim theology and doctrine from the Qur’an to contem-<br />

porary Muslim thinkers. Topics include the faith and practice<br />

of Muslims, the doctrine of revelation in Islam (reason vs.<br />

revelation), how the Qur’an influences the daily life and wor-<br />

ship of Muslims, the systematic character of Muslim thought<br />

and of the arguments given by key Islamic thinkers: the emer-<br />

gence of Sunnism in the tenth through eleventh centuries;<br />

the reaction of Muslim theology (from 1800) to the challenges<br />

of the West; and contemporary Islamic thought.<br />

InCs 325 folk islam ...................................................................................3<br />

A survey of popular Islamic belief and practice throughout the<br />

Islamic world, regional case studies, popular contemporary<br />

Islamic religious movements and leaders, and exploration of<br />

indigenous Islamic ritual in the non-Arab world. This course<br />

equips students to understand the ontology and phenom-<br />

enology of folk Islam from a biblical perspective in order to<br />

contextually communicate to the felt needs of folk Muslims.<br />

InCs 331 Peoples of ethnic america ...................................................3<br />

A study of non-caucasian ethnic groups in America in light of<br />

their historical and socio-cultural background. Practical field<br />

experience in an ethnic community.<br />

InCs 332 Peoples of the World ..............................................................3<br />

A study of specific cultural areas with an emphasis on<br />

customs, social structures, religion, arts, and history. May be<br />

repeated with different course content. Areas of specialty may<br />
