Concepts and processes involved in the development of the<br />

person throughout the lifespan are reviewed with emphasis<br />

on cultural variations. Major theoretical systems relevant to<br />

individual development are examined with emphasis upon<br />

the study of neurobiological, cognitive, affective, and psycho-<br />

motor changes manifested in childhood and adolescence.<br />

Various theories on the development of psychopathology are<br />

addressed, with a focus on psychodynamic theorists including<br />

Freud, Adler, Jung, Klein, Winnicott, Fairbairn, Kohut, and Stolo-<br />

row. Prerequisite: A survey course (graduate or undergradu-<br />

ate) in developmental psychology, and RSPY 515. Required of<br />

Psy.D. and Ph.D.<br />

A study of systems theory with a focus on communities,<br />

schools, health agencies, governmental human service agen-<br />

cies, churches and families. Provides a conceptual basis for un-<br />

derstanding the interactions among individuals and systems.<br />

Practical applications include knowing how to enter systems<br />

and maximizing available resources for clients, particularly<br />

those who are disadvantaged or handicapped. Elective.<br />

Preventive Psychotherapy models....................................3<br />

The course focuses on the development of psychoeducation-<br />

al approaches aimed at prevention of emotional difficulties or<br />

early secondary intervention of difficulties. Interventions suit-<br />

able at strategic developmental phases or critical situations.<br />

The student will be asked to develop a seminar or workshop,<br />

deliver it to a suitable population and evaluate its effective-<br />

A consideration of the impact of social and cultural factors<br />

and a look at research on biological and psychological differ-<br />

This course provides an overview of theory, research and<br />

roles of psychologists in the dissemination of psychological<br />

knowledge into the health care system. Areas of focus include<br />

concerns of the family physician for which referral might be<br />

made, adjustment to physical disabilities, coping with chronic<br />

illness, stages of adjustment by individuals and their families<br />

to death and dying, preventive-educative and motivational<br />

issues in medical treatment. Prerequisites: RSPY 6<strong>07</strong> and / or<br />

RSLB 706 or 7<strong>07</strong> are recommended. Elective.<br />

rsPy 632 research Problems in Psychotherapy ..............................2<br />

Consideration of research approaches to studying the process<br />

and outcomes of psychotherapy. Special emphasis is placed<br />

on measurement of process and outcomes, design and<br />

execution of research and status of psychotherapy research to<br />

date. Students are actively involved in reviewing and evaluat-<br />

ing psychotherapy research in selected areas. Prerequisite:<br />

RSPY 601. Elective.<br />

rsPy 633 advanced seminar in Psychopathology .........................3<br />

A survey of the development, dynamics and classification of<br />

the psychological disorders from a psychoanalytic point of<br />

view. Special attention is given to the neuroses and the opera-<br />

tions of ego defense mechanisms. Elective.
