Development of skill in independent study of topics in the<br />

field of Christian Education Ministries. Prerequisite: Senior level<br />

Christian Education Ministries majors only and departmental<br />

approval. May be repeated. Offered Fall / Spring, by arrange-<br />

Objectives<br />

It is the purpose of the Communication Studies Department that<br />

when you complete our majors you will have: (1) well developed<br />

personal communication skills and be able to think, write, and speak<br />

clearly and effectively; (2) learning skills which will enable you to<br />

continue to develop personally and professionally after graduation;<br />

(3) entry level skills for employment in your chosen field or else have<br />

suitable preparation for graduate study; (4) at least the beginnings<br />

of a workable world view which unifies your life’s work and your<br />

Christian faith.<br />

Degree Programs<br />

Upon completion of the university baccalaureate and major requirements,<br />

the Communication Studies department offers the Bachelor<br />

of Arts degree in two majors:<br />

• Communication Studies<br />

• Communication Disorders<br />

note: All majors must achieve a minimum grade of a “C” in all<br />

major courses taken at <strong>Biola</strong>. Anyone receiving a lower<br />

grade must repeat the course with a higher grade to<br />

receive credit for the course.<br />

In all majors, the total number of units for major area credit from<br />

practicum, internship and directed research courses may not exceed<br />

nine units. In all majors, the required general education course<br />

for the Communication Studies Department is COMM 100, unless<br />

otherwise stated .<br />

Major: Communication Studies<br />

Students must choose one of three emphases under this major:<br />

• Communication Studies<br />

• Speech / Drama<br />

• Interdisciplinary Studies<br />

When students have completed this concentration they should be<br />

prepared for employment in fields where excellent interpersonal and<br />

group communication skills are especially important. This concentration<br />

is also excellent preparation for advanced graduate work<br />

in the discipline of communication studies. Many of our graduates<br />

have gone on to earn their MA and PhD degrees in the field at other<br />
