i^jj. John Snell, fourth s<strong>on</strong> of George Snell, succeeded his<br />

father as <strong>gold</strong>smith and banker, at the sign of the " Fox," in Lom-<br />

bard Street; born 165 1. He is menti<strong>on</strong>ed in the "Little L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong><br />

Directory" as keeping "running cashes" in 1677 at the same house.<br />

1677. Thomas Williams, <strong>gold</strong>smith, at the "Crown," in Lombard<br />

Street, kept "<br />

running cashes " in this year ; he was the predecessor<br />

of Messrs. Willis, Percival and Co., bankers.<br />

1677. John Coggs was a <strong>gold</strong>smith keeping "running cashes"<br />

at the "<br />

King's Head," in the Strand, in this year, who had appar-<br />

ently a very good<br />

c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> as a banker.<br />

Sir Robert Viner's manager,<br />

1677. John Temple, <strong>gold</strong>smith. '<br />

carried <strong>on</strong> his business after Sir Robert's great loss compelled him<br />

to it. relinquish Pepys styles him, " the fat blade. Sir Robert Viner'3<br />

chief man." In 1777 we find him at the "Three Tuns," in Lombard<br />

Street, in partnership with John Scale.<br />

In the "Little L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> Directory" of 1677 we find a list of<br />

<strong>gold</strong>smiths who were also bankers or kept "running cashes"; <strong>plate</strong>-<br />

workers, not keeping shops for the sale of <strong>plate</strong>, are excluded from<br />

"<br />

this list. Hereunto is an additi<strong>on</strong> of all the <strong>gold</strong>smiths that keep<br />

running cashes."<br />
