1 5 18. The four wardens of the Company in this year were<br />

Sir Thomas Exmew, knight, Roger Mu7idy, Henry Calt<strong>on</strong>, and<br />

Robert Oxendly. Their names are attached to a bill of expenses<br />

for " a drynking and dinner <strong>on</strong> St. Dunstan's day " ; amount,<br />

28 9s. 6d.<br />

1 5 19. Ralph Latham, <strong>gold</strong>smith. In the will of Rawf Lathom,<br />

citizen and <strong>gold</strong>smith, 15 19, is menti<strong>on</strong>ed: "Duos pelves argenti<br />

cum lavat's in medio unius est una Rosa in alio scutum armor<br />

'meor.'" C. P. C. Ayloffe. A <strong>gold</strong>smith of the same name, probably<br />

his s<strong>on</strong>, is in the list of Freeman Householders of the Gold-<br />

smiths' Company in 1553.<br />

1 5 19. Sir John Thurst<strong>on</strong>, <strong>gold</strong>smith and embroiderer, also<br />

Sheriff and Alderman. Stow informs us that he erected, at his own<br />

cost, <strong>on</strong> the bank of the river Thames, extensive granaries for storing<br />

up corn for the c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> of the city in times of scarcity, also<br />

six very large and four smaller public ovens. He gave ^^40 towards<br />

rebuilding Imbroiderers' <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hall</str<strong>on</strong>g>, in Guthur<strong>on</strong>s Lane (now Gutter<br />

Lane), and ii^ioo towards rebuilding St. Foster's Church, wherein he<br />

was buried in 15 19. At an assembly of the Company in 1 521, it is<br />

recorded : Forsomuch as Sir J. Thurst<strong>on</strong>, Upper Warden, was de-<br />

parted to Almighty God (<strong>on</strong> whose soul have mercy), the felliship<br />

named and chose to be Copper Warden in his roome Sir Thos. Exmewe,<br />

Knt."<br />

1522-3. Sir John Mundy, <strong>gold</strong>smith, Mayor, 1522-3, was s<strong>on</strong><br />

of William Mundy, of Wycombe, Bucks. He was buried in the<br />

church of St. Peter in Cheape; ob. 1537. The name of Roger Mundy<br />

(his s<strong>on</strong>) is signed to a bill of expenses at St. Dunstan's feast as<br />

Warden of the Company in 1518.<br />

1526. At St. Mary Overie, Southwark, between 1548 and 1550,<br />

they parted with four chalices, weighing fifty-four ounces, to <strong>on</strong>e<br />

Calt<strong>on</strong>, at the sign of the " Purse" in Chepe, of which the said Calt<strong>on</strong><br />

made two communi<strong>on</strong> cups weighing but fifty-two ounces, the<br />

balance due being 17s. 8d. ("Surrey Church Notes," by J. R. D.<br />

1526. Hans Holbein, artist, born at Augsburg, 1494, died in<br />

L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> in 1543. He was introduced by Erasmus to Sir Thomas<br />

More in 1526, when he came to England. He entered the service of<br />

Henry VIII in 1537, and remained in England until his death. He<br />

designed numerous pieces of <strong>gold</strong>smith's work, cups, jewellery, etc.,<br />

during this reign. A drawing by him, for a cup for Queen Jane<br />

Seymour, is in the print-room of the British Museum, as well as<br />

designs for jewels. Other drawings are preserved at He was buried in St. Catherine Cree Church.<br />

1530. Thomas Calt<strong>on</strong>, <strong>gold</strong>smith at the "Purse in Chepe." His<br />

name is signed to a bill of expenses as Warden of the Com.pany in<br />
